Death Threats in a Freshers Uni gc

I’m in a University of Reading 2024 starters group chat, and these two guys who are in the same accommodation type as me were arguing, so I said that we should all just chill and be friends and celebrate that we got into uni instead. Now one of the guys has said that he’s going to kill me and the other guy and him and 30 friends are going to kill us when we’ve started uni. I’ve got some evidence for this already. The guy doesn’t know what I look like. Is this something I should be concerned about? His Snapchat name isn’t his actual name, but I’m wondering if I should report this, as I’ve spoken to other people in the group chat and he’s making a lot of people uncomfortable and not looking forwards to starting uni.
if he's making everyone uncomfortable then get multiple people to go with you and report him that way one person won't be targeted by him afterwards and he won't be able to do much
Screenshot and contact the police to report threats and harassment.

Is it an official chat that you can report to the uni also?

Hi Anonymous,

I’m so sorry to hear that this has happened to you - behaviour like that would not be tolerated at this university at all! Please do report it - I will speak to my manager about what we can do to support you in dealing with this and ensure that you have an enjoyable start to your university career, nobody deserves to feel scared for their life or worried about moving to university because of one person’s awful behaviour!

We do have an onsite 24/7 security team with a hotline dedicated to keeping our students safe, and of course that service will be available to you when you start uni, so I hope that reassures you that if anything were to happen, which I’m sure it won’t, there is support in place to help deal with incidents. Please be assured that most people aren’t like this, and halls is usually a really fun experience for all our students, we want to do our best to ensure it stays that way! Please feel free to DM us and we can discuss it in more detail if you like and figure out what steps we can take if you want to raise it further.

Best Wishes,

Personally I would IMMEDIATELY report it to Police as "threats to kill" is a specific and very serious offence

Threats to kill s.16 OAPA 1861
Threats can be calculated and premeditated or said in the heat of the moment. The defendant does not have to have the intention to kill but there has to be an intent that the person to whom the threat has been issued would fear it would be carried out. This can be a difficult offence to prove, and it should be reserved for the more serious cases. Where it is doubtful whether the threat carried the necessary intent a charge under s.4 or s.4A Public Order Act 1986 (see Public Order Offences incorporating the Charging Standard) or other offences such as at s.1 Malicious Communications Act 1988, s.127 Communications Act 2003 may be appropriate.
If the threat accompanies an assault, adding a charge of Threats to Kill will normally be unnecessary. There may be exceptional cases where the severity of the threat is not matched by the physical injury sustained in the assault. The offence will be particularly appropriate if there has been no assault or if an assault has been prevented, yet the person to whom the threat was made was given real cause to believe it would be carried out.
Concerning as it. I'd put money on it being a stupid bit of showing off and probably not worthy of making a big song and dance about. Was it a one off or this an on going worry?

Whoever it is who made the threats should be banned/expelled from Reading Uni, immediately ,and I hope that they will be. It is a serious criminal offence, not a joke.

Hi Anonymous,

Just to expand on my previous comment after speaking to my manager, we want to make it clear that once an individual is a student at the University of Reading, they are bound by our Harassment and Bullying Policy (#NeverOK) which applies to all staff, students and contractors. However, as of right now the University is not present on Snapchat through any official channels which unfortunately means we cannot investigate the claims and are unable to moderate any comments made on the platform. While we strongly recommend that any incident that occurs while you are a student of the University be reported, unfortunately, prior to joining the University, there is little action that we are able to undertake, especially on platforms that we don’t have official channels on, and from your message I understand the individual in question is not an enrolled student, which restricts the action we as a university may be able to take. As other commentors on this thread have pointed out, reporting this kind of behaviour is very important and we would recommend that you do take this forward and we would therefore recommend that you report this incident through both the appropriate social media platform and to the police and remove yourself from any groups relating to the University that are not run or moderated by us. If you feel comfortable, it would be great if you could contact us privately through The Student Room with any other information about this incident so we can monitor the situation going forward and see what steps we may be able to take within the university- our students' safety is of utmost concern to us. We do not tolerate any form of bullying or harassment within our official University channels.

If you would like to connect with other offer holders, please use our private Offer Holders Instagram Page where I'm sure you'll find many likeminded people to help bridge your transition to uni. We will have also launched a Facebook group which is invite only, where you can meet others who have applied to your course and start your own conversations. We also recommend that you check out our tips on staying safe on social media.

Please feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns you have at any point - we really hope this situation can be resolved quickly and easily and of course as a university we want to do whatever we can to ensure you have an enjoyable experience at Reading. As a student here, I can say that the university have numerous incredibly supportive departments and procedures in the rare case of a difficult incident such as this. In your Fresher's week you'll find out more about them, and hopefully meet many kind and interesting people who will make your uni experience much more positive. Please reach out to friends and family if you are struggling mentally to deal with this incident - don't struggle on your own.

Best wishes,

Hi Kat, all three of the students have been removed from the group chat now and everyone is getting along now again so it’s all worked out. Thanks for your reply though, I think they were just trying to show off and seem cool so I’m not worried as they don’t even know what I look like

Hey Anonymous,

Great to hear - I'm very glad! They sound like very strange people if that's their way of seeming cool - definitely keep your distance from them if you do encounter them in halls! Best of luck with the rest of your uni prep!
