What are the pros and cons of university of Southampton and where will you guys rate the business school of Southampton?
Hi @Syed Talha

My name is Akshita Gupta and I have just finished my first year studying BSc Business Management with Placement at the University of Southampton. As a student representative, I am happy to share my insights about some pros and cons of studying here to help you make an informed decision.

Pros:

Academic excellence and reputation - University of Southampton is ranked 80 on the QS World University Rankings 2025. Southampton Business School has a great reputation both in the UK and globally due to its academic excellence, research prowess, outstanding facilities, student satisfaction and support, and alumni success.

Outstanding Facilities and Support Service - The university provides fantastic facilities to students such as modern libraries, labs, a startup incubator, a sports centre which offers a wide range of fitness activities, and much more! The Hartley Library was like my second home during the first year, as I would spend most of my time working in the study pods there. I found it to be an amazing place to have study sessions and work on group projects.

Campus Life and Location- The university has a vibrant campus with green spaces and beautiful gardens. Southampton is a lively and student-friendly city with good connectivity to London and other cities. There are plenty of activities and events taking place on the campus and around the city, and also many pubs and places you can go out to with friends. During my first year, I felt that there was always something happening that I could get involved in!

Opportunities - The university provides students access to a wide range of opportunities and activities that can help them gain work experience, essential skills and make money. I was a student ambassador during my first year, and I found it to be a great way to develop my social skills, make some amazing new friends and earn money, all while balancing it with academics.

Cultural diversity - The student body is diverse with students from all over the world. I feel that this provided me a great opportunity to learn about different cultures and perspectives.

Cons:

Weather - The weather in Southampton frequently experiences rain and wind. Although it is not a major issue, it is something you should be prepared for.

Academic pressure - Just like any other top university, the academic workload can be high. However, I was able to manage my time effectively as there are a range of facilities and support available.

Nightlife - While there are plenty of activities and events taking place on the campus and around the city, some students feel that the nightlife in Southampton is not as happening as some other big cities like London. However, I think there are still many pubs and places you can go out to with friends and have fun!

Personally, I rate the Southampton Business School very highly because of the quality of education, student support, outstanding facilities and opportunities. Students get the chance to get involved in a range of opportunities like student societies and clubs (over 400), on-campus jobs, enterprise events, internships, and much more! In terms of student support, each student is assigned a Personal Academic Tutor (PAT) to help you with any course related problems, there is a Student Hub which can be contacted 24/7 and the advice centre in the student Union. The careers, employability and student enterprise team provides extensive support to students in terms of work experience schemes, CV support, networking and volunteering opportunities.

I hope this helps!

If you have any further questions, please feel free to post your questions and I will be happy to get back to you as soon as possible.

Thank you,
Akshita Gupta
