Hi there,

Starting out at UEA can be a big adjustment, especially with managing finances alongside your studies and social life. While I'm not a first-year med student myself (final year PhD student in BIO) I can offer some general insights based on what I've heard from others in similar situations.

Regarding timetables, they can vary widely. Typically, medical students have a structured timetable with lectures, tutorials, practical sessions, and clinical placements. It's a demanding program that requires dedication and focus. As for balancing social life and studies, many students find ways to strike a balance. It often comes down to effective time management and prioritising tasks. Medical school can be intensive, but there are opportunities to socialise and relax if you manage your time wisely. You can join several UEA societies for example and find out what resonates with you best.

Regarding part-time jobs, it can be challenging to juggle work alongside your studies, especially in a rigorous program like medicine. I did sciences in my undergraduate, masters and PhD and have always managed to have a part time job. Some students do manage to work part-time, but it depends on your course load and personal circumstances. Cost of living in Norwich is a lot lower than other cities: https://www.uea.ac.uk/study/fees-and-funding/cost-of-living

Have you considered discussing your financial concerns with UEA's student support services (https://www.uea.ac.uk/welcome/supporting-you)? They might be able to help.

I hope this helps give you some perspective. Feel free to reach out if you have more questions or need further support.

Best,
Daniel
