Can you help out a confused Mom???

How can I find out what the difference is between BA Film, BA Film Studies and BA Film Production? Where do I start or does anyone know? I’m trying to figure out which will be the best for my son. He’s currently studying BTec Broadcast, Film and Content Creation and wants to persue a career as a colourist/ cinematographer/ director. Any help would be appreciated- thank you

The info about the course content for each of these would give you an indication of what each one involves (look on the uni webpage for each course). Also look at graduate destinations.

hiya ! im also going to be studying film + media in september

it is vital that your son reads the modules and description of the course content on the websites. each university use different wording so it really differs across universities/courses ect

FILM STUDIES: note the word 'studies'. this course will take a more theoretical approach. your son will likely be studying, analysing and watching films. he will be doing essays, and theoretical work. if he wants to go down this theoretical route, there may be some aspects of production but it is not production-heavy, and will mainly based on analysing existing films rather than producing films. a russell group university/prestigious one is more likely to provide this

FILM PRODUCTION: this will be a more hands-on course, where he will produce and create his own media/film products, using editing software and post production methods to edit this. it sounds like this would best suit his needs in my opinion, as of course if he wants to go down the route of being a director or cinematographer he needs this industry practical knowledge. a film school/art university is more likely to provide this.

FILM: this will probably be a 50/50 blend of both production and theoretical. it will ensure he has the skills to pursue his career, while also understanding the history behind film and how to successfully analyse a film. basically the best of both worlds!

i hope this helped. if you have any further questions feel free to ask!!!
