University of Birmingham Distance MPhil/PhD

So... I did a BA in History at the University of Birmingham almost 20 years ago now. In the meantime I did a bunch of study up to a masters in mainly Computer Science related subjects. However the option of doing a part time PhD in History by distance learning at Birmingham intrigues me, especially as I now live abroad and I couldn't even do occasional visits into a campus. (Also my cousin did a distance MA there and enjoyed it.)

However I see that to do a PhD in History on the Distance Learning path you need a *relevant* MA, which I don't have. Now I note the MPhil only requres you to have a BA, which I do. So my question is... is it possible to enter on the MPhil course and then upgrade to a PhD after a couple of years as a normal non-distance part time MPhil student might? Or is it expected that you need this first and being transfered is impossible?

In my department (Shakespeare Institute) such transfer is expected and usual. Not sure about how they do this in the history department though. Maybe send them an enquiry to ask?
