i was curious whether is it fair to want the bigger room in our uni house if you just have more stuff and need the storage space? i wanted to hear what people thought about this!
I have the biggest room in our house and I pay £5 more a week but the landlord decided that the rooms would be cheaper for smaller and a bit more for bigger

Hi Anon, It would depend if other people also wanted this room, in that case it might be best to draw straws out of a hat for it, or try to think of a compromise for your other flat mates eg. allowing then to neatly store some of their belongings in the living room. Hope this helps! -Jasmine (Lancaster Student Ambassador)

Hi there,
I think it would depend on whether other people really wanted this room too.
To make it fair in my student house, we spun a wheel for each room. Deciding randomly may mean people don't get what they want, but it is the most fair.
If you or others need storage space, you might be able to decide and agree that certain spaces in the house can be used to store things. For example, in a closet or in a common space. If there isn't enough room for everything you/others would like to bring, you might need to re-evaluate and make some cuts!

Hi,
This can be a tricky thing to sort out, especially if multiple people want the same rooms.
I think the best thing to do is to discuss which rooms everybody would prefer to have as you may find that everyone wants a different room which would make it easy. However this is unlikely so you will likely need a fairer way to sort it out.
If a few people want the biggest room which you also want, I think you would either have to agree that you pay more and get that room or you sort it out a fair way. If everyone is in agreement that you can pay more and have that room then that sounds fair but if not, or if you don't want to pay more, you will probably have to sort it out another way. This will stop arguments and will make it much fairer as it is very unlikely that people are going to just give up the room they want without doing it like this.
In my house, we also did a wheel spin to se who would get what room. The first person whose name came up got to choose first and so on. This meant that even though people may not have got the room they wanted, everyone was happy because it was fair and it avoided any arguments. This is likely the way you will have to do this if everyone wants to pay the same amount.
If you don't do it a fair way, it could lead to arguments throughout the year or people resenting you (or you resenting others) which you don't want when you are moving into a new place as it should be fun!

It depends if anyone else wants/needs that room. It also depends kinda what you need the storage for. In my second year house the person who had the second biggest room was doing an art degree so needed a bit of space for art supplies. But the flatmate had the biggest room in the house was also the coldest room, so that might be worth bearing in mind
When we initially picked the rooms you could have whichever one, but if multiple people wanted it a coin toss was done.

Hi there,
This can be tricky as it could be dependent on the reason for having more stuff e.g. medical reasons or due to personal circumstances. However, generally this is not usually a reason for a bigger room. Some landlords put a price difference on different rooms to make it fair between occupants where as other times the occupants of the house may choose to split the rent depending on room sizes. In my house last year me and my friends all paid the same rent but we pulled out numbers from the hat with each room labeled. For us this worked and was the fairest way to choose rooms as well all would have preferred an upstairs room.
As others have suggested it might be the case that you all decided on a communal place which others are able to store stuff if there is not space in their room as others may have a larger room to be able to store all their stuff in.
I hope this helps and your room situation in your house is figure out 😊. Katie - Student Ambassador
