A Level retakes

I am currently a year 13 student sitting their A levels, during the year I had some difficulties which were out of my control. My attendance was 54%, I dwelled too much on things I couldn’t control and now I’m going to be looking at bad grades. I had received reduced offers from top universities due to my participation in Realising Opportunities. I want to work in a top level finance role, what are my options? I’m keen on retaking my A levels but I am unsure of the process. What grades do I apply with?

My GCSEs were all 8’s and 7’s, my year 12 predicted grades were AAB. I’ll be lucky to achieve something like CCD now.

Also does anyone know where I can fetch finance related work experience during my retake year?

First mate, if your attendance is 54%, "top universities" will take notice of that, and they won't overlook it. Dropping from AAB to CCD is crazy. I don't know what you're going through, but a lot of academically smart people I knew in college lacked discipline and ended up with rubbish grades. You seem to be that person too. There's no such thing as "work experience and getting paid"—that's called a job. What you get in uni during your third year, if you opt of it and the uni has that option, is a work placement and even then the pay is rubbish.

Honestly, I have no respect for people who have low attendance because they couldn't be bothered to get out of bed.

On a real tho, if you don't wanna go through college again and wanna make a little money, maybe try to find an apprenticeship of some sort that you like. It may provide you with that discipline too.

"you seem to be that person" is crazy, he's been bedbound because of a car crash - a hospital bed, that is, and you say dropping from "AAB to CCD" is crazy. He asked for advice not a lecture.

It’s cool he wasn’t aware. Medications messed up my cognitive function and gave me multiple side effects.

I wasn't trying to insult or disrespect you either. It just seemed like you were someone who was taking advantage of the freedom you get in college, and I get it now. I was just sharing the experiences I've had. If you're dealing with a medical condition, I totally get that. But my point is no matter the case, if you're going to struggle with attending places, its gonna seriously limit you in life.

Honestly, I wish you the best. I was just sharing the experiences I've had with some people around me.

Don’t stress about this too much, see what grades you get first and what universities may have you. My friend was originally going to Aberystwyth predicted A*AA because she liked their course best, but then she got CCD as she was going through some things hence the grade drop. She got into University of Plymouth still. There is hope and I think places would still take you regardless.

It’s rarer but I heard someone getting a place at Newcastle when they got CDD.

Thank you sm for your reply! By any chance do you know who has done retakes? I want to possibly resit in order to get the grades I have the potential for.

Hi there. I am a retaker and I applied for Accounting and Finance, similar to you. I got B,C,D last year but I was predicted A*AA, so also a big drop. I also went through something very tough, involving police and social services which impacted my attendance too. I have recently finished my exams and feel so much more confident, after starting medicating and getting extra time and rest breaks in my exams  All I have to say to you is to not worry. Despite my poor grades, my referee wrote what happened on my UCAS application and I managed to get an offer from City, Warwick and Bath for A&F! They all need at least AAA so it shows that if you have a good reason then they are okay with you retaking after getting poor grades. I just wanted to share my story in hope that it motivates you. I believe in you and good luck with retaking. Unfortunately I can’t help out with Finance based work experience, but perhaps look at online courses which you could mention in your personal statement. I didn’t do any work experience but it didn’t affect my application at all and Unis didn’t seem to mind so I’d say focusing on your grades is the most important thing.

Yes I applied to Unis with my achieved grades, but I also had to input my predicted grades. Warwick needs A*AA for A&F, I’m not too familiar with the grade requirements for Economics however so just make sure to check each Uni’s website. Also I am doing a lot better mentally after seeking out the right support. Sometimes things don’t go the way we want to, but we just have to keep working hard to achieve what we want  and also believe in ourselves!

Were your sixth form willing to provide predicted grades for you? I don’t think mine allows it I asked nearly every member of staff from exams office to teachers.
