Can I start uni at 21

I will maybe be doing a foundation year at uni of Leeds and then starting 1st year after that . Is it weird I’ll be 21 when I do start 1st year? Obviously I am not going to university to date people as I want a degree but I don’t enjoy the idea of being with guys younger than me . I feel I will be too old .

I will be significantly older when I start and so will a few other students. If it bothers you that much then you can always do something with the open university.

Not weird at all, there were some people on my course who were 23, 24 and up into their late 20s/early 30s. Honestly most people won't bat an eyelid at your age, it's just a means of introducing yourself, I know I didn't lol. If they do, that just reflects that they wouldn't be comfortable doing so, so don't let it affect you. 21 is extremely young, please don't let anyone convince you otherwise, we don't expire as soon as we leave our teens.

Hey 👋 definitely not weird or too old! Age is just a number 🙂 I know on my course there were people of different ages who had started uni later for different reasons, a few people had taken gap years to figure things out so started a few years after finishing school or college. So you may find the same!

Starting university is an exciting time, I hope you have the best experience!

Hiya 😊

Mature students start at every stage of life and you will be among the youngest of the mature students. Also if it helps, people aren't going to know how old you are.

At school, college, sixth form, etc you don't tend to mix with people of different ages as your classes are separated by your year group. At uni, you will find people of all ages studying the same modules as you so it's not weird to have friends of different ages, because you're all at the same stage of your degree, so you've immediately got that in common.

I started my degree at 31 and have friends in their early 20's to late 30's that I met through my course and also through different societies that I joined.

Just focus on enjoying your time at uni, and your foundation year. With Leeds campus made up of over 30,000 students, you'll find your crowd soon enough!

Best wishes,
