Maintenance loan eligibility for Undergraduate Medicine as a graduate

Hello,

I currently hold a BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Sciences and I will study Undergraduate Medicine (5 yr) this year. I am aware that I will not be granted tuition fee loans but through research thought I would be eligible for maintenance loan. Am I still eligible for maintenance loan for undergradute medicine (full time 5 years) with a second degree? Any advice on receiving maintenance loans would be deeply appreciated.

Hi agile_jules,

If it is an undergraduate medicine course and you will hold an equal level qualification, you would be entitled to the Maintenance Loan only. You can apply for the full Maintenance Loan including the income assessed element in years 1-4, in year 5 you would be in receipt of the reduced rate of Maintenance only.

Thanks, Clare

Hi Clare,

Thank you for your response. Yes my second degree will be an equal level qualification, but when I contacted SLC I was informed that only DSA and supplementary grants would be available. I am aware that since I would be studying medicine and it would lead to a professional Qualification then I would be entitled to Maintenance loans ( https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/student-finance-how-youre-assessed-and-paid/student-finance-how-youre-assessed-and-paid-2024-to-2025 ). What should I do to be granted the loans?

Hi Clare,

Thank you for your response. How do I receive the loan? I have already applied and have been told I will not be granted any maintenance loans.

Is it possible to receive further support from SLC with my application regarding this?

Hi agile_jules,

If the course is 'Medicine' it should be an exception. You would be best starting a live chat on your account or calling us so that an adviser can take a look at your account to see why this has happened.
