MMU accommodation private vs normal

I recently got private accommodation for MMU in September at Parkway Gate, I did it through the MMU website so I assume it’s just MMU students but I was wondering apart from the facilities, how much different is private accommodation compared to the normal flats etc in terms of social life etc and will I be with anyone from different years?
I lived in private accommodation outside the centre since I got in through clearing and social life was pretty drab tbh. No one wanted to go out in my hall but luckily I had some mates from my course to go out with. The private accommodations do tend to be nicer than uni ones though but usually more expensive. Also worth noting that the mmu accommodations sell out pretty quick.

I’d definitely recommend trying to live in the centre. Parties and pre drinks also tend to be more in the uni accommodations rather than private but I think being in the centre is definitely the main thing.

Yh where I’m staying is close to the uni and bars etc I think. Which private accommodation did u stay at and were students first years?
I stayed in IQ Manchester Gardens - it’s a bit out the way of all the nightlife. Half my flat were first years half were second/final year students who just wanted quiet time to study so didn’t really go out. I think most halls tend to be first years though.

Most second/third year students normally arrange a house share in Fallowfield. I lived in Fallowfield in a house share second year and it’s definitely full of students and has quite a few good cheap student bars.

Right ok I’m closer to bars and things so maybe that might make a difference, think it’s a 4 min walk to courtyard, so am I more likely to be with first years then or is it just random with private and just down to luck with who you are with as some may like going out more than others etc

Nearly all the people I know in halls are first years, especially in the centre so I wouldn’t worry about that. In terms of going out it’s luck of the draw really. My flat only had 3 others so I just got a bit unlucky. If you have more flatmates you might have some luck.

And there’s plenty of other opportunities to make mates too. If you join a society, they’ll have weekly or monthly socials so you’ll always have people to go out with.

Yeah that sounds decent overall then, I’m obviously nervous about who I’m going to be with but that’s normal. I’ve got I think like up to 6 flatmates in total I think maybe 5 so not loads but hopefully they’re decent and obviously on your course there’s a lot of people overall as well as societies etc. So hopefully it’s a fun and enjoyable experience.

Hi there,
I’m an MMU student and stayed at private accom at Dwell student living!
I was in a flat of 4 with 2 international students, a third year from uni of Manchester and me. Private accommodations are usually lovely and have some fab facilities. I had a gym and a games room and they often put a lot of events on in the building.
Have you been I contact with the flatmates yet?
Hope it all goes well,
Emily

Hi, I haven’t done yet. It sounds good, what course did you do and was your accommodation done through MMU or was it on a separate website where any uni students could go?

Im also looking at private accommodation, especially this Parkway one, around 4-10 min from the main mmu-owned-halls area. Wondering how close to the centre you'd consider close enough for a social life?
