Personal statement woes

Does anyone else ever just think about writing their personal statement and how painfully ordinary they must seem? Like I’m pretty sure i’ve never actually done anything personal statement worthy, and I see all these other people with really impressive achievements and think “how am I ever going to get into uni?”. Does anyone have any tips on how to make myself stand out amongst the crowd, I want to go into astrophysics so work experience is sparse and summer courses are insanely expensive.

You can get into impressive universities without super impressive achievements in your personal statement - what they're really looking for (especially for maths / physics) is that you show a passion for your subject rather than some probably irrelevant work experience. I assume you're in Year 12 so probably a good time to start thinking about it. Over the summer, I just read some of the books from the reading lists from some of the universities I was applying for, I also rushed my piano exam to get my certificate lol but I don't think it ended up making a difference. When talking about books, definitely don't just list them but instead point out things you found interesting, and how you looked into them more after, e.g. I was applying for maths, and talked about how I was interested in modular arithmetic that I read about in a book and saw some links with some music from my hobbies. I applied with no work experience or summer courses, and got offers from all 5 unis incl. St Andrews, Edinburgh, Warwick etc. Definitely look on TSR for some examples of other's personal statements as well, mine ended up being a bit of a mash that I spent way too long on but it ended up flowing very nicely and I was quite proud of it when it was ready.
Oh and don't forget Gold DoE, that's for sure a guaranteed automatic unconditional from Cambridge..

TLDR - read some books over the summer!! and don't stress over work experience
