Will I receive special consideration from exam boards?

I’ve just been diagnosed with melanoma during my exams. Have had to have the cancerous mole removed with a minor surgery but obviously the whole situation is very stressful (particularly as I have severe health anxiety and do not yet know the staging of the cancer). It has definitely reduced my concentration, sleep and revision time. I need to get A*A*A for my firm choice uni - My school will inform my unis and exam boards , do you think they are likely to award any special consideration? Thanks!

I think you would need to get a GP letter talking about it in context to health anxiety (will have to be a diagnosis with anxiety) to then explain the academic impact for it to possibly approved. I would send this directly to the uni itself and the special consideration will be a 4% mark increase. If it helps I was diagnosed with melanoma during covid and my surgery (although had some inital complications) has kept me cancer free since. I understand the stress!

Thank you so much for your reply! I went through therapy etc privately but will message my psychotherapist and ask her to write a statement - do you think this will be fine? She does diagnostic appointments that can be used in the nhs so she is well qualified and everything or will they only accept it from GP (in which case I’m probably doomed because the waiting lists are a joke - although could try and book one of those same-day appointments the week I finish my exams to get them to be able to put something in writing?)

Ah that must have been super scary for you - especially in covid!! So glad you’re cancer free now 🥳🥳 Thank you so much for the reassurance!! I have my scans to see if it has spread to lymph nodes after my exams and have to get more skin taken around the around the initial removal which is annoying but fingers crossed that’ll be all that needs to happen !!!! xxxxx
