The joke that is NHS Dentists

So today, 6 years after my last nhs dentist visit, I thought I'd call them for a checkup as I have slight toothache I want looking at but apparently as I've not been for a while I'm no longer considered registered. 28 years as a regular patient only for them to **** me off when I actually need them. What an absolute **** show.

And to top it off, I have used the NHS dentist finder and 9 of the closest NHS dentists within 30 miles of me who say they are taking new patients online are not actually accepting them. So unless I'm want to do an 80 mile round trip at least, I just have to put up with this and even then it's no guarantee they are taking new patients.

Honestly I'm this close to calling 111 and playing up my symptoms just to get emergency care with the hope they will refer me to a closer one.

Oh, yes. Sometimes I don’t understand them. I had a dentist who had been seeing me for several years, but now he has moved to Australia. And I don't want to end up with just anyone, so I got in touch with him. He recommended another doctor, and a month ago I thought I had made an appointment with him. But after driving 20 miles, I found out that they had changed their mind and scheduled me with a random one. I couldn't wait any longer and had to get treated by him that time, and it was very unpleasant for me.

Turns out the nhs finder caps dentists a 30 miles. What a ******* joke. I have literally called every dentist in my area which says it can take NHS patients and non of them can. Only one said they will for under 17s.

I literally have to call 111 now because I have no alternative.

NHS Dentistry appears pretty much to be dead with neither political party showing the will to restore it

I'm not surprised - you are supposed to go to the dentist every year and they have the right to remove you if they haven't seen you for a long time.

Why would i go to the dentist if i dont need it? I dont do go to the hospital for a check up when im healthy. Its a ******* stupid rule.

No, it's preventative - you don't know when your teeth start to rot - it only hurts when it gets bad. It's sensible and it's not the same as seeing a doctor:

Let me make a suggestion. Pay maybe £50-£70 get a check up at a Private Dentist. Choose a good one and you will find at end of day you will be much better off teeth and money wise. Most of the NHS dentists are ONLY interested in bringing you IN on NHS and then selling you Private work and are NOT as good as the truly Private Dentists.

Ugh, that sucks big time. It's ridiculous how hard it is to get an NHS dentist these days. I had a similar issue and ended up having to go private for a one-off just to get my tooth sorted. Maybe try calling 111 and see if they can at least get you some pain relief or advice.

Seriously ,check out a few Private Dentists. Be very careful who you choose though, but I have found a few good ones.

To all those aking me to check private dentists. I'm not paying 4 time the amount required compared to the nhs. As a NI payer for 15 years I should be able to get a NHS dentist

And you will lose your teeth and stay in pain for point of principle ?. I would'nt. I am 100% supportive of Labour and the NHS but sometimes one has to be pragmatic. The reality is this. There are chains of so called "NHS Dentists" who USE the "NHS Dentist" bit to pull in all the people who THINK they will get good free care, like we used to. They do not do that. What they try and do is convert you to their own "Private" which is NOT anywhere near as good as other truly Private Dentists. As well you can get some not too bad prices with some Private Dentists. Believe me I have been around to see some.

Rubbish - are you are dentist?

All your statement is rubbish - the NHS dentists I've come across are brilliant - ditto those of friends. Your experience is one example ...
None of them have pushed me to go private either ... ban private dentistry and that would help.

All YOUR Statement is rubbish. There are very very few NHS Dentists left who are any good. The chains of so called "NHS Dentists" are simply playing the system and bringing people in so they can sell them additional Private/Paid for services , they are not really at all interested in NHS. Yes I would prefer to see Private banned and then Dentists forced into NHS but that aiyt going to happen soon. But my statement is perfectly true. Are you actually an NHS Dentist, coz you sure aint a "Student" I can tell.
