Changing course

Hi, I’m currently down to do 1st year of psychology but during my advanced higher chemistry course, It’s inspired me to learn more about chemistry. I really wanna change my BA psychology degree to Mchem. Do I sit through psychology and see how it’s like? Or do I request to transfer as soon as possible ? I don’t know how to go on about this

Would I be right in assuming that you don't study Psychology at A level? (If you did, there would be no need to "see how it’s like".)

Before you applied for Psychology, did you attend any open days - and so receive any presentations on Psychology? Did you attend any "taster" Psychology lectures? (Some universities offer these on open days.) Have you read the course description for the Psychology courses for which you've applied? Have you watched any YouTube videos on Psychology, or of any Psychology lectures? All of the above could have given you a sense of what Psychology is about.

Turning to Chemistry, you will have applied for university in year 13. So you'll have had a full year of A level Chemistry (and two years of GCSE Chemistry) before you opted to for Psychology. So what's changed in the last 6 to 9 months to make Chemistry so appealing now, when it wasn't before?

Hey Anon!

You'd be transferring between two different faculties so I wouldn't be able to guarantee that you'd be able to make that switch. Your offer was made on the basis you'd like to study Psychology so the Chemistry department would need to consider whether they'd accept a transfer. I'd suggest getting in touch with them at [email protected] should be your first move. Include your UCAS ID so that they can find your record.

As @DataVenia has suggested - are you sure that Psychology isn't right for you any more? Have you done Higher/AH Psychology this year and what did you think of it? How did you find Higher Chemistry?

I haven’t done adv H or higher psychology as it wasn’t available at my school, for advanced higher chemistry I was assigned a new teacher who gradually sparked my interest in further chemistry. The teacher was new. I didn’t like higher chemistry but for some reason enjoyed adv H if that makes sense, the two are very different. Doing my project after January is where it started. And in terms of psychology I’ve read the description and YouTube videos and I can’t explain this loss of interest 😭

Hey Anon, did you get in touch with the departments above? How did you get on?
