Are the stereotypes about Merton true?

I have an offer to go there in October and I'm getting really nervous after hearing its where fun goes to die. I didn't know about its reputation when I applied and I don't want to be stuck in a college where no one goes out for 4 years. Is this reputation true or do people at Merton actually have fun?

Ignore the stereotypes. Merton is not a prison. You can have as much fun as you choose to have, so long as you get your work done, and that is easily achievable if you are organised and diligent. If you find the vibe not to your liking, make friends in other colleges. Enjoy the delicious food.

Part of the Oxford thing is ****ging off other colleges, and some colleges get more ****ging than others.

Relax and enjoy this -

So that's where he acquired a taste for being mistreated by people dressed in black!

Merton does have the rumour/reputation (unfairly, imho), but these things really depend on who's in charge at the time, as well as the cohort that particular year. When I was at Oxford (2007-2010), LMH was the actual place where fun was said to die!

Pay no attention to Merton's supposed reputation. It's a great college and well-located. Had great food whenever I visited. You'll be fine :hugs:

I also have an offer and I’m down to go out so you’ll have at least one person on side 🫡

There you go, OP, the party is ON!

A quick Martini in The Ivy, pints in the King's Arm's, a swifty in the White Horse, a couple of shots at the George Street Social, cheap and nasty vodka at 'Spoons, then off to Raoul's in Jericho for some proper drinking.

PS: that's for the mornings before a tutorial, obviously. After the tutorial you can get serious.

It's not true! I didn't know about the reputation when I applied either, and it soon didn't matter because of how much fun freshers' week was. It's true that there are a lot of studious people at Merton, but that doesn't have an impact on the people who do want to go out. There are loads of entz events, more than at many colleges I've visited, and bops are great!
