Prospects for studying Biochemistry

Hiya! I'm currently going into my second year of uni at the University of Bath, studying Biochemistry with Integrated Masters degree. To anyone who used to study biochemistry at bath or is currently still a biochem student, can you tell me what possible prospective careers or pathways I can go down after I get this degree? I'm just a bit unsure of my future as a biochemist and what jobs I can go into, graduating from Bath!! Any help is appreciated!

Hi @thechemimech! I am currently in year 12 and looking at doing Biochemistry next year, and I am also wondering about what to do with a degree in biochem! Would you recommend doing it and do you have any regrets about taking it?

Hello!! Sorry for the extremely late response! It's awesome you're thinking about Biochem next year at uni!! Personally, I initially took the course as I wanted to go down the medical line but wanted to go into Research & Development in virology and some aspects of biological chemistry really sat well with me during A-Levels! After finishing my first year, I can tell you it is not an easy course at all; And since the course structure is a bit vague during first year you learn a bit of everything during your first year in order to get a glimpse of what you want to take/pursue later on. As for regrets, I'm not particularly intelligent as a student, but I think if you have an interest in fields like genetics, molecular biology, and immunology, you might not have any regrets at all! Potentially keeping an option open to try out for academia (maybe do my PhD and try for a Professor role) as this field's quite good for that it seems!

Sorry about the whole bunch of yap, if you have any other specific questions for year 1 alone, I'm happy to share anything and everything!! Hope everything goes well with university applications!

Hi! That's really helpful, thank you, and your plans sound great! I'm currently debating whether to do biochem or just straight chemistry, I'm a bit worried that there isn't actually that much chemistry in biochemistry! Would you say that there is lots more biology than chemistry?

I’m still undergoing this debate whether to try and change my course! There is a course called Chemistry for drug discovery which I’m looking at and seems to be chemistry with the disease aspects of biology in it which is what I like best, I’d recommend going into baths website and talking to some of their students as I found this very helpful! Good luck and hope a levels are going well
