David’s experience studying Cyber Security at the University of Roehampton

Hey everyone, I’m David, a Cyber Security student at Roehampton. I want to share my insights and experiences from my time studying at this fantastic university.

Why did you choose to study Cyber Security at Roehampton?
When I was deciding where to pursue my Cyber Security degree, Roehampton’s exceptional reputation stood out to me. Plus, being part of the first-ever undergraduate group in the Cyber Security department sounded like an exciting opportunity. Roehampton’s equipped with top-notch software and facilities like VMware, autopsy, FTK imager, and hex editor, giving us hands-on experience in the field. It’s clear that Roehampton is committed to preparing us for the future of cyber defense.

What are some of the key skills you’ve developed while studying Cyber Security?
What I enjoy the most about studying Cyber Security is the problem-solving skills it helps you develop. To succeed in Cyber Security, you need to be ethical, detail-oriented, and able to spot security gaps that others might miss. Roehampton places a strong emphasis on developing these skills, ensuring we’re ready to tackle the challenges of the field head-on.

What extracurricular activities have you participated in during your time at Roehampton?
One of the coolest parts of studying at Roehampton is the chance to get involved in extracurricular activities. My course timetable allows for extra-curricular opportunities and allows us to pursue part-time work. From participating in the robotic car challenge to joining hackathons and attending employer-led sessions in Career Development Week, there’s never a dull moment. These experiences organised by the university provide great opportunities.

How has Roehampton supported you throughout your studies?
Roehampton has been incredibly supportive throughout my journey. Our teachers are dedicated to guiding us toward our career goals, and the university supported me with financial assistance through the hardship fund during tough times. Plus, as a commuting student, I appreciate the convenience of the free Roehampton bus service, and access to facilities like the library canteen and computing labs, which you’ll find me in often!

What advice would you give to future students considering studying Cyber Security at Roehampton?
To anyone thinking about studying Cyber Security at Roehampton, my advice is simple: go for it! Whether it’s digital forensics or penetration testing, the field offers many opportunities. Personally, I aspire to become a pen tester, and Roehampton provides the perfect platform to achieve that goal.
