Applying for both HSPS and PPE

Hi, I am currently in year 12. I would like to apply for HSPS at cambridge as I really love the course that is offered, but obviously it is not a course which is offered at other unis as it is very exclusive to cambridge. This means that I would also like to apply for PPE at LSE, UCL, Warwick, York, as I just think that it is the next best course which matches my interests, however as I am drafting my personal statement I am worried that placing too much emphasis on PPE will hinder my chances at HSPS, and vice versa. Is it genuinely feasible to apply for both HSPS and PPE competitively, with a personal statement that is attempting to cater for both courses?
For context I am taking the A-levels Maths, economics, history and politics, and also an EPQ (which is on social contract theory)
any help would be appreciated!!

it's not that uncommon especially since cambridge has their own supplementary questionnaire

if you are applying to lse you will need to whole-heartedly commit to that subject on ur ps (and ucl too)

I see. so would that mean to just write a personal statement for PPE, and use the supplementary questionaire to express an interest in HSPS?

yep pretty much

although since oxford does a ppe course idk why you wouldn't apply there?
PPE doesn't have that much overlap with HSPS (only potentially the politics side). Most applying to HSPS i believe tend to be applying to the individual social science areas that contribute to that course (e.g. politics, anthropology, sociology, criminology, international relations) and related courses and joint honours courses.

Bear in mind you will ultimately specialise in just one ir two of the areas covered in the HSPS course so for all intents and purposes it is just a single or joint honours course in one or two of those areas, plus some additional options in first year (and having optional external modules is common in social science programmes elsewhere). I think the only really unique aspects are the social anthropology and religion track and the (no longer available I believe?) social and biological anthropology track.

In any event if your interest is in PPE otherwise I don't really see the sense in applying to a largely unrelated course at Cambridge vs just applying to PPE at Oxford. If your primary interest is politics and international relations then it'd make more sense to apply to courses in those fields alongside HSPS rather than other PPE courses elsewhere I think too?

What exactly is it about HSPS that you like?

I think i just prefer the HSPS course compared to the PPE course offered at oxford. plus i feel my chances at oxford PPE are extremely slim, as i think at my school theres only been like one successful oxford PPE applicant in the past 10-15 years or something like that? so yeah i think i prefer the course at cambridge bc of how broad it is and the aspects of study which it goes into, but also my chances at oxford PPE aren't great

i really love how broad it is and how you can study so many disciplines within one degree. I really love studying political theory and political philosophy, and i also really love the study of humans and human society, which is why i also think i would enjoy studying the sociology/anthropology aspect of the degree. the only thing its missing for me is the economics element, bc i love economics but its not really included at all within a HSPS degree (although you do study economic thinkers during the course apparently, such as Adam Smith for example) which is why I also have an interest in studying PPE

yeah i get your point. Basically my interests are in political philosophy and the study of humanity and society (hence why HSPS is up my street) but i am also interested in a lot of economics, which is why I also have an interest in PPE. Maybe ill just end up having to choose one or the other, rather than applying for both

I think your allusions about "humanity and society" are a bit vague and inherently societal implications and effects of political and economic theory and policy will be prevalent in a PPE course, and since you've specifically indicated an interest in economics I think your interests really lie in PPE and personally would suggest just applying to Oxford for that along with your other subjects (also Oxford PPE includes some sociology/sociology adjacent options via the politics options). That way you can prepare a much more focused personal statement and you can also focus your wider reading on more relevant topics for all of your courses instead of spreading yourself more thinly. As nothing you've said seems to indicate to me a strong inclination towards HSPS compared to PPE.

Hi, I am a year eleven in the same position that is about to choose subjects (IB). I currently don't have an avid interest in economics (although I have a strong curiosity) but if I decide to focus on PPE I am worried that I am going to be taking maths (which is extremely difficult to get the highest grade in IB, and in general), and economics which is a risk because I haven't studied it before. Whereas with HSPS I would likely be studying philosophy, english, and anthropology which I think I would enjoy more and has much less risk. If I were to apply at LSE I would only apply to Politics and Philosophy, or some other joint honours. Could you give me any advice?

You don't need to take economics to apply to an economics degree. Maths would be essential though.

However I think the fact you say you think you would enjoy the second set of subjects more and would do better in them, and that you don't have a particularly strong interest in economics anyway, strongly suggests to me that you should forget about PPE since it's clearly not aligned with your interests as much as the alternative (and you seem to have concerns about whether it's aligned to your strengths) and focus on your strongest areas that you're most interested in - and then apply to whatever follows from that (which may be HSPS or otherwise)
