Failing A-Level retakes.

To provide context, I’ve never really been brought up in a household that prioritised education so I went into a-levels not knowing how to revise or time manage. I dropped a level chem last year and got a DU in psychology and biology, having decided to re-sit all three this year i thought I would have an academic comeback however I’m in a position now where i know I’ll fail. I want to go to university really bad and study pharmacy but that wont be the case and the foundation years that I’ve come across, I don’t think I’ll even qualify for them during clearing. What should I do? Should I re-take? Shall I get into a trade?

Hi, I’m retaking too, it takes so much discipline but email Unis for Foundation years, try Clearing or looking at apprenticeships.
If not then I would repeat the year with same A - levels or look at Uni requirements - some allow a BTEC and an A level or two. But I’m not sure if you can complete a BTEC within a year, contact your school maybe?
Another fellow retaker here! Im in the same boat as you but im an international student. Just email universities about foundation years. Apply through ucas during clearing and write a nice personal statement etc. Explain your circumstances to the uni and pray.

If it doesnt work out then you can do an access to HE course which is 1 year instead of 2 years and is equivalent to 3 A levels. thats what im gonna do if clearing doesnt work out. Orrrr you can just try retaking A levels again, but you are going to have to do something different in terms of changing ur habits so that you can actually get decent grades. You dont wanna waste another year.

Good luck! Hope everything goes well

Thank you, I’ll possibly try that. If that doesn’t work out i may have to get into a trade. I really appreciate your advice, thank you honestly you don’t understand how comforting that is.

Hi mate, pretty much identical boat to you looking to study MPharm this year after getting BCC last year and missing my offers. Retaking bio and chem. I’m on track to get my BB offer from Aston but have an unconditional from Wolverhampton as a back up. So all I say is give these three a levels all you’ve got because getting into Wolverhampton through clearing (while not a prestigious uni) could require as little as CCC. Put the work in 👍🏻.

Brightons a much better university than Wolvo. According to UCAS lowest accepted student onto MPharm was CCD. Not a great uni but still GPhC accredited which is all that really matters.

That’s bloody crazy the funniest thing is the GPhC hasn’t even labelled that as one of their problem unis (problem unis being the unis which are producing the lowest number of passing foundation pharmacists)

Do you already have a MPharm offer because I spoke to the two unis where I have an offer and they told me that if I don’t meet the requirements and they’re is space on the foundation courses then they will just offer that to me instead

consider the reason there are foundation degrees, is because people who take them arent usually qualified to take the first year. So ask the question to university: "Do I qualify for a foundation, If I do not should I retake Alevels? Are there other options?" Also ask the same questions to your current Sixth form.
Remember if you are shy about asking questions (I am too) In 10 years its unlikely you will see or speak to the same people again (me right now) so just ask the question!!
