Social Work Masters Funding (Bursary vs SFE)

I am starting a Social Work Masters in September and hoping to be lucky enough to get an NHS Social Work Bursary. If not, I will apply for Student Finance.

I emailed the Uni to say I would be grateful to be considered for the bursary and when will I find out if I've been nominated for one, and their response was this:

'The bursary for the MSc is calculated following registration in September and using the feedback obtained at the interview panel. We do try ensure all out students have a bursary but this is dependant on the availability from NHS bursaries.'

I've submitted an application for the Bursary anyway as it needs to be approved by the Uni when they decide who gets nominated. But my question now is, can I apply for Student Finance now 'just in case'?

I'm aware you cannot get both the Bursary and SFE, but can I get approved for SFE now, then cancel it if I get the bursary in September?

Whether I get the Bursary or SFE, I'm going to have to fund some of the course, so it's driving me insane not being able to plan exactly how much, what sources etc.
Bump

Hi there,

Yes, that's right - feel free to apply online for the Masters Loan - the applications should be live in the next week or so: https://www.gov.uk/student-finance-register-login

You can cancel the application online later if you need to, that's fine.

Thanks, Graeme

Please could someone advise. I'm beginning a Social Work Masters in Sept 2024 at Hertfordshire Uni. I'm hoping to receive an NHS Social Work Bursary, but if not, I've applied for Student Finance England as backup. Now the issue I'm having is this:

- I cannot get through the Joining Portal process with University of Hertfordshire without submitting my SSN Number from Student Finance England.
- I can't get my Student Finance application approved until I've sent a rejection letter from the NHS Social Work Bursary.
- The NHS bursary isn't chosen until Sept / Oct.

So how do I progress in time to start Uni in September??? I'm trying to contact all 3 but finding it difficult to figure things out.

Hi, Picking up from where we left off.

I'm having the issue where SFE are saying they can't progress my application until I have been rejected from the NHS Bursary which isn't until after registration.

But my University is now asking me for my SSN which I don't have because my application can't be processed because of the above.

Any advice please?

Hi there,

Although we can't approve your application without that evidence a SSN should have been generated for you automatically.

If you can't see that anywhere on your account you can call us on 0300 100 0031. If the number is there we'll tell you what it is.

Thanks, Graeme
