work experience opportunities for science

Hii, over the summer I was hoping to further my interests in science by gaining some work experience in the field, but Im not sure what opportunities are available. Im mainly looking for opporunities to do some research-oriented work in biomedicine or medicine, and perhaps a few chemical engineering opportunities as well. So far I've heard of the programmes such as the Nuffield Foundation but I believe its exclusively for 16-18 year olds, so what other opportunities are available to me? Any suggestions and past experiences would be of great help, thankyou!

I don’t know where you live but in the summer after my GCSEs I did a weeks work experience in the “research and innovation” department of a local NHS trust. It took a deep dive on the internet to find the place to sign up but I think it was really beneficial. I also did some at a pharmaceutical company through my school.

Hi @seagull11 ,

If you’re looking for some research-orientated work experience in biomedicine or medicine, I recommend contacting any universities close by to where you live. There’s usually a directory/contact list of professors and staff, with what specific field of research they’re in. I would then tailor the email to the topic they were working on and attach my CV there too.

That’s what me and many people I know tended to do. Sometimes, it’s quite successful!

Aside from universities you could contact any local research companies/ businesses near-by (if there are any). You could also reach out to Hospitals for any clinical medical research. There can sometimes be a page about the research they do on their website.

Most opportunities for research in bioscience tend to open earlier in the year and are funded too! I believe most applications are closed now but for next year, if you are interested, you could contact several professional societies such as the Biochemical Society or the Genetics Society, who offer these types of schemes. There’s also The Francis Crick Institute.

I’m not too sure about chemical engineering but you may find opportunities on: Gradcracker, Bright Network, Target Jobs and RateMyPlacement.

I hope that helps and wishing you the best of luck on securing a summer work experience opportunity!

Kind Regards,
Britina
