If you want to - go for it

ask yourself why? What made you change? Do you know what an optom is have you seen what they do in a day?

I know you’re in the middle of exams right now, but I would suggest doing work experience, as you don’t want to make a quick decision which you may regret. Just phone up opticians and see if you would be able to shadow the optom (aim to do this before clearing opens)

Often when people do this they are able to get an insight and be like nah not for me or yep defo for me.

if you go on to ucas type the name of course and click show vacancies or something you will be able to see which unis are accepting applications

Hope this helps, but I want to remind you focus on the present (makes sure you smash those exams, and make sure you are mentally well as mental health is the most importantly wealth)

Thankyou so much for replying. That is a very good idea i will try and find some experience right after i complete my a levels on friday. Does 'show vaccancies' mean those courses may be available in clearing?

Have you chosen your firm and insurance? Is optom available at either of these? If so, call them and ask if it would be possible to swap. But, make sure that this is really what you want to do. As above, try to get some shadowing experience first. You could also consider deferring your current offers to 2025 entry, then take a gap year. It will give you longer to decide and then if you do want to apply for optom, you could withdraw from your deferred place and submit a new application by Jan 2025.

No i unfortunately did not apply for optometry even though i had thought about it. But i just changed my mind very last minute so this is very inconvenient for me. I really dont want to take a gap year and i really just hope that this course will be available in clearing. If not ill probably just stick with ODP. It does say there are still vaccancies for optom in bradford but i dont know if it will remain like thst. I genuinly feel stupid right now.

Don’t feel that way, because you haven’t even started the course so it’s not late

There may also be foundation years (which if your grades are fine you may not need to consider), and these usually are available on clearing.

If you are really passionate you will go for the foundation, or clearing etc

Speak to head of sixth form for advise, maybe contact the unis

Yes, if it still shows they’ve got spots it will probably go into clearing

I can’t remember if you have done your exams yet (I assume not because bio and chem haven’t finished yet - as these are needed) once you have your best bet is contacting the unis - as they are the only ones who can confirm.

You can contact them as soon as clearing opens (as you’ll be able to find their contact info on ucas clearing page) which is 5th July

If Bradford still shows vacancies there is still no harm in asking them before clearing.

I think I mentioned this before they are likely to have foundation years on clearing (as they are mainly for people who don’t have right requirements - either grade or subject) but they may also have normla spaces especially if people change their mind or don’t get the grades.

You just need to do WEX, check clearing and wait

I think it might be worth you calling UCAS next week to explain your situation and ask if you can decline your firm and insurance choices to apply for a different course at a different uni through UCAS Extra. You would also need to call Bradford to make sure the course is still open to applications. UCAS Extra is open until 4 July so you would need to act quickly but make sure it is what you want to do as you will have to decline your ODP offers to do this if it is possible.

The thing is i dont want to lose my offers from ODP and the fact that i may not get accepted or be considered when i apply for optom in bradford worries me. This is because my predicted isnt high enough for optometry.

Okay i will contact them as the list comes out but if i havent recieved my grades what would i say to them? Also is it likely other people would take up the spots between 5th july to august 15th, as a level results only come out on august 15th. Im just so worried. Please can you just pray i can get in this way.

If on results day you have a confirmed place at your firm or insurance, then you won't be able to apply to Bradford in clearing without declining that place first. A 'decline my place button' will appear on UCAS hub by results day.

Clearing spaces advertised before results day are aimed at international students and are not a reliable indication of what is going to be available on 15 August. Unis receive results about a week before results day. If there are any places left once they have taken all the students who have met their conditions, then they will look at those who have missed their offers by a grade or possibly two. Generally, unless it is a very competitive course, unis prefer to take near misses who want to go there rather than enter the course into clearing.

So my best bet is applying through ucas extra?

It's worth calling Bradford to see if they are still accepting applications and whether you would be considered if you don't have high enough predicted grades. If they are accepting applications but are not dropping the entry requirements, then you know it is not an option for you at this stage. You would then need to sit tight until results day.

There are people who have applied for this course in bradford and got in with low predicted such as ACC and my predicted is ABC
