Advice on courses at Bangor, Northumbria, Southampton and Surrey, any thoughts?

It's great to hear that you are considering the University of Southampton for your studies in Music. As a student representative, I am happy to share my insights about studying here to help you make an informed decision.

University of Southampton is ranked 80 on the QS World University Rankings 2025. The University has a great reputation both in the UK and globally due to its academic excellence, research prowess, outstanding facilities, student satisfaction, support, and alumni success. The university is ranked 3rd for music in the UK on the Complete University Guide 2024.

Whether you are looking at an undergraduate, postgraduate or a PhD degree, there are plenty of degree options available. By clicking on the link, you can view a range of music degree options and find more information about each individual degree. This includes entry requirements, course structure, modules (compulsory and optional), assessments, how to apply and much more! The music department offers fantastic facilities to its students to enabling them to explore and develop their musical talents to the fullest.

Personally, I would recommend University of Southampton as I am really enjoying my time here as the student life is extremely fun and exciting. Southampton is a lively and student-friendly city with good connectivity to London and other cities. The university has a vibrant campus with green spaces and beautiful gardens. There is always something happening that you can get involved in! There are plenty of activities and events taking place on the campus and around the city, with many pubs and places you can go out to with friends.

Further, the university provides students access to a wide range of opportunities and activities that can help them gain work experience and develop essential skills, such as on-campus jobs, entreprise events, recruiter fairs, training programs, internships, and much more! Southampton University Students' Union is extremely active and offers students numerous events, clubs and societies (over 400), ranging from academic clubs to ones related to sports, hobbies or culture.In terms of student support, each student is assigned a Personal Academic Tutor (PAT) to help you with any course related problems, there is a Student Hub which can be contacted 24/7 and the advice centre in the student Union. The university also provides fantastic facilities to students such as modern libraries, labs, a startup incubator, a sports centre which offers a range of fitness activities, and much more!

I highly recommend visiting us on one of our open days, as it will be extremely helpful for you in making your decision.

Here at Surrey, you’ll be able to study a music degree that is ranked 2nd in the UK by the Guardian University Guide 2024. We have a multitude of different music courses available to suit your preferences, such as our undergraduate courses, postgraduate courses and PhDs.

These courses all belong to the Department of Music and Media, who are able to expose students to a unique world of music diversity, in their state-of-the-art music facilities!

The University of Surrey is also ranked Top 5 in Music for Overall Student Satisfaction in the National Student Survey (NSS) 2023. If you’d like to hear directly from the students themselves on the course that you’re interested in, I recommend you check out their student profiles here.
