The first anime with a human-robot-relationship I know. That sounds weird enough to be a good anime.

There have been a few series with this premise in the past: Chobits and Plastic Memories would be the best known ones.

There have been a few series with this premise in the past: Chobits and Plastic Memories would be the best known ones.

They have one thing in common: students are the main character in these two animes. The other one has a worker as difference. That is certainly not a coincidence.
It begins! But not with the series I had planned - looks like Isekai Suicide Squad isn't streaming anywhere official in the UK, so that leaves a space for something else on my list. Since I've already been talking about it, let's try:

Boku no Tsuma wa Kanjou ga Nai (My Wife Has No Emotion)

Takuma is an office worker, who is too busy to find time for household chores. And so, he buys a pre-owned, older model robot housekeeper to cook and clean for him! However, Takuma hasn't had much of a love life for some time, and one night while drunk, jokingly asks his robot (named Mina-chan) to be his wife. Mina takes this seriously, and while she has no emotions, she does have internet access, and looks up ways to express love - resulting in a heartful ketchup message on Takuma's omurice meal. The rest of the episode followed Takuma's attempts at getting closer to his appliance/bride, including their first attempt at sleeping together (sleeping in the literal sense!)

It was another robot girlfriend series (Chobits) that first got me into manga & anime, and I've read + watched many others in the years since. But most of them featured more advanced models, barely distinguishable from humans. I figured that a romcom focused on a more obviously mechanical love interest might be interesting; her eyes are unblinking cameras, and her mouth doesn't move when she talks - there's deadpan comedy potential there, and a few of the jokes landed. But the rest was just really awkward: the tale of a bland, lonely self-insert protagonist and his subservient property. Maybe that weirdness will lessen as their 'relationship' develops, but this isn't off to a great start. Dropped.

Tasuuketsu (Tasuketsu -Fate of the Majority-)

One day during Saneatsu's computer class, a strange message appears on everyone's PC: "You are currently looking at this screen. YES or NO". His teacher dismisses it as a screensaver, telling the class to press anything and forget about it. The next day, seemingly everyone who hadn't seen that screen suddenly dies. The surviving teacher and pupils gather at the school to try and work out what's going on, only for a second YES or NO question to flash up on their devices later that day. A second round of deaths follows, along with an announcement that the 'test' is over. And so begins a survival game, run by the mysterious 'Emperor', to whittle the human population down to only one.

I expected this to be trash. Most survival game anime are trash, but they're usually my kind of trash. This though, goes beyond trash. Every character suddenly lost their friends and family, yet they barely seem to care, coming across as 2D and dull. Doesn't help that the pacing is breakneck, fitting 3 questions into one ep didn't leave much time for character development. A few do turn on each other, or start suspecting each other, but a poor script made it come across as more comedic than dramatic. The game's rules are confusing, but I think at least some of that is deliberate on the Emperor's side, mystery isn't always a bad thing. Animation is low budget. I think this season has better to offer.

As usual, I'll keep my thoughts on the sequels a little shorter, to minimise spoilers.

Oshi no Ko S2

The story of a gynaecologist who gets reincarnated as the baby of his favourite pop idol, only to see her murdered years later by the same crazed stalker who ended his previous life. Now highschool age again, Aqua is convinced that his unknown 2nd father is involved in the killing, so takes up work as an actor to meet influential people in the entertainment industry, and obtain samples of their DNA for paternity tests. That's the insane premise, at least! But this reintroductory ep focused on the acting side - specifically, on the decisions that go into adapting manga into a stage play script, and why controversial changes are sometimes necessary. Solid, if lacking the drama and impact of its S1 debut.

Senpai wa Otokonoko (Senpai is an Otokonoko)

Makoto receives a love letter confession from Saki, but Makoto has a secret - he is an otokonoko [Wikipedia article], and he expects Saki to lose interest after hearing this. Instead, this revelation only makes Saki even more interested in him! Makoto still turns her down, as he has never felt romantic attraction to anyone, but Saki refuses to give in, and follows him around to an almost obsessive degree, determined to win him over. Throw in childhood friend Ryuji, who staunchly defends Makoto from Saki on the assumption that she is trying to hurt or make fun of him, and you have the makings of a love triangle!

Hell yeah I'm picking up the romcom with a focus on gender themes! I'm sticking with the he/him pronouns for Makoto despite reviewers on other sites opting for they/them... the subtitle for this show is literally "This is him (can't be anyone else)", so who am I to argue with that? Anyway, I like these characters already, three completely different personalities who should make for good comedy. But the scene at the end, when Makoto leaves school and says goodbye to 'himself' after changing back into traditionally male clothing, strongly implies that his family aren't supportive and that there will be drama to come. Animation is a little on the cheap side, but I enjoyed the chibi moments.

Definitely this season's most hyped sequel!
Ramen Akaneko

In a world where sapient talking cats run businesses, human Tamako applies for a job at Red Cat Ramen, a ramen shop run by only cats! The boss, a stripey ginger cat named Bunzo, asks her whether she likes cats; Tamako replies that she is more of a dog person, and is hired on the spot! Apparently businesses run by cats attract a lot of cat lovers, so they'd prefer a co-worker who's willing to give them more space. The other staff are head chef Sabu, customer service rep Hana, Sasaki on finance, and literal tiger Krishna who makes the noodles. Tamako's main job is brushing her cat colleagues, to help them relax (and to minimise the amount of hair that ends up in customer's food)!

CAT RAMEN ANIME! Yeah, there's not much to say about this one, except that it's really cute, relaxing and heartwarming. No deep plot, no drama (yet?), a few cat puns but not as many as some other series cram in. Reviewers on other sites have called it slow and boring, and I can't see it appealing to everyone, but I'm more than happy to watch this in an evening after work, when I don't have the brain power for anything more complex. Animation was mostly nice 2D, with a bit of 3D mixed into some scenes (particularly the cat brushing, and ramen serving), but the two styles meshed well and the differences weren't that jarring or noticeable. Voice acting was great. CAT RAMEN ANIME!

Shoushimin Series (SHOSHIMIN: How to become Ordinary)

Kobato Jougorou and Osanai Yuki are friends from middle school, who are now just starting high school. The two are determined to live 'normal lives', which Kobato defines as 'never standing out, spending every day in peace, and doing everything possible to avoid things that interfere with that'. But another rule of being ordinary is 'not turning down requests from acquaintances, for fear of causing a disturbance', so when another childhood friend phones Kobato asking him to help find a classmate's stolen bag, he reluctantly agrees - and his detective skills quickly become apparent. Could this be the first of many mysteries? (I assume so, from the genre tag)!

This case was mundane, a simple crime with a simple resolution, no fantasy elements or dramatic reveals. Despite that, the writing had me gripped instantly, and the ep flew by so quickly that I felt cheated! Props to the animators, it looked GORGEOUS. Not sure why they went with the letterboxed aspect ratio, but I got used to it. The sound was interesting too, very little music, instead opting for lots of ambient background noises; it made the school setting feel more real, that it was being used by other people not related to the story. And then there's the main duo - close friends, both trying to move on from their presumably abnormal middle school days. Intriguing, can't wait to learn more about them!

Shikanoko Nokonoko Koshitantan (My Deer Friend Nokotan)

Koshi Torako is a former delinquent gang leader, now trying to turn over a new leaf in high school. She is intelligent, athletic, and super popular. All is going well - until the day she passes a girl hanging by her horns from overhead electrical wires. Torn between not wanting to get involved, and fear of what will happen if she *doesn't* get involved, Torako eventually saves the girl... who then fixates on her, transfers to her class, and starts giving away her secrets (which she can detect instinctively) to everyone. Nobody else reacts to Nokotan's horns, even after she destroys half the classroom with them, removes them, makes them flash red, and tries to eat them.

This series has caused quite a buzz online, ever since its trailer and catchy OP theme were released! I'd say the first episode mostly delivered, though absurd slapstick comedies like this have always been a favourite of mine. Nokotan herself is an agent of chaos, who may be capable of anything, while Torako serves as the tsukkomi to her boke. The jokes around virginity were awkward though, I hope they don't keep focusing on that. Its 2D animation wasn't anything special, got the job done, but the 3D deer that followed Nokotan around were a fantastic touch. Certainly worth a look, as comedy is highly subjective, you'll soon know whether this show is for you or not.

Yes, I've watched a few of the live action movie adaptations. I haven't watched the anime adaptation, but I don't think many people have.

Me too. I did not know anything about the existence of an anime adaption. Did you watch Ramen Akaneko yet?

Yes, the one episode that's out at the moment at least. All my first impressions posts (from #25 onwards) are based on having watched the first episodes. :yep:
Mayonaka Punch

Main character Masaki has recently been kicked out of the popular NewTube group Harikiri Sisters, after getting into a physical fight with the other members during a live stream. Frustrated by all the negative comments directed her way, she tries setting up a solo channel, but attracts even more hate. Undeterred, she sets up auditions for a new streaming partner... but only trolls looking to stir up further drama attend. Meanwhile, a vampire named Live has just awoken from a 20 year slumber, during which she dreamt of a delicious girl who looked just like Masaki. Live visits an abandoned hospital in search of blood - just as a drunk Masaki shows up, looking to film a video.

This has the potential to be fantastic! I've not watched a series based on YouTube-style content creators before, so it has that originality going for it. Vampires, a lot more common in anime, but her waking up unaware of modern smartphone technology is an interesting twist in a series where they'll be prominent. And protagonist Masaki stands out for not being a particularly nice person, based on what we've seen of her so far! It'll be interesting to see what antics they get up to in their attempts to go viral. Animation and music was top tier, as I'd expect from P.A. Works - though they're producing 3 anime series at once this season, so I hope the quality holds up across all of them.

Also, RIP Crunchyroll's comments and reviews, which they've removed from the site due to trolling and negativity... strangely relevant that this would be the first new episode I watch after the change!
This next one was voted onto my list by readers of my external blog, so I'm obliged to watch this series to the end, good or bad...

Tensui no Sakuna-hime (Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin)

Sakuna is a goddess, who lives a cushy life. Every year, she is rewarded with a top job, due to the high quality of her rice offerings to the head goddess; but this rice was grown by her mother, and other gods resent her for not putting in any work herself. One day, a group of humans wander into the gods' realm, and Sakuna fails to send them away. They raid the warehouse where the offerings are stored, and a fire breaks out! As punishment, and to teach her some humility, Sakuna and the humans are banished to the demon-inhabited Hinoe Island. Will she be able to adapt to a life of farming and demon fighting? And will she find her missing parents, who were last seen on this island?

Thank you blog voters, this might just be my favourite first episode of the season so far! Certainly had the best world building, though a lot of it is based on Shinto mythology, a solid foundation to work with. Sakuna is another flawed protagonist, cheeky and immediately likable despite her spoiled nature; the human group includes a cowardly samurai, a foreign missionary, and three young children, all with very different character traits. Production-wise, P.A. Works has again delivered here - it looked amazing and sounded even better! Looks like this series will be an interesting mix of slice of farm life, supernatural action, and family drama, plenty there to keep me entertained.

Na-Nare Hana-Nare (Narenare -Cheer for You!-)

Misora Kanata was a skilled member of her school's cheerleeding team, but feels unable to 'fly' anymore. One day, she sees a girl jumping from rooftop to rooftop, and gives chase - turns out she's not the only one, as while the parkour pro evades her, two other girls follow shortly behind. One is a YouTuber, looking for a video subject to help her go viral (sensing a theme with P.A. Works' original anime this season!), who quickly switches targets to Kanata, having been impressed with her running. We eventually learn that the parkour girl is named Obunai Suzuha, and after trying again to catch up with her, Kanata unexpectedly regains her ability to 'fly'.

If that description sounds rambling and confusing to you, try watching the episode, it was all over the place and featured far more characters than mentioned here! Certainly a departure from your usual trope-filled high school sports anime first ep, far more focused on introducing its large cast than on cheerleading at this point. I'm going to give it a chance despite its issues, because those characters and their energy have won me over, the plot can come later! Animation is again very good, the cheer and parkour scenes were dynamic and full of energy, though I think these girls are operating in slightly lower gravity than we are.
