Regretting uni career optometry

I was so passionate abt Dentistry and wanted to do it badly. I got put down by the huge pressure&popularity of dental skls and rlly hated the idea of a gap yr so I ended up applying for optom. I had the option of doing pharmacy but after my work experience I absolutely hated it. J kinda regret the fact I didn’t give my dream a go at least

Im js thinking rn if I was doing a career other than my dream career it should at least be of a good pay, so I could’ve at least done pharmacy
Idkk Im js lost rn. main plan tho is try my best rn w alevels and see the outcome :/

Why are yoy averse to taking a gap year? I've just finished Year 13 and I didn't even take the UCAT last year cos I decided on dentistry a bit late, so I'm every intention of taking a gap year. Gap years can make you a much more well rounded uni student with some life experience and extra cash under your belt to help you make the most of university.

It's not too late to try for dentistry. UCAT registration opened a week ago and you have until the end of September to book. If you truly can't see yourself doing optometry, and you have faith that you can secure at least AAA come August, I think it's worth the shot.

If you have not started this degree, step back, have a gap year and do some calm clear thinking.
Nowhere does it say you can only go to Uni this year.

i don't know a whole lot on this, but i do believe optometry is actually better-paying in recent years. especially as pharmacy begins to get more saturated. pharmacy isnt nearly as lucrative as it once was, so dont get too down about that

If you only motivation for either of these careers is money, then you might like to rethink working in any area of public healthcare.

hii im literally in the exact same position, i was just wondering have u started revising for ucat yet and when did u book it for, im nervous about taking a gap year tho cos if i get rejected i have to take another one

Hi I’m starting my revision this week and I’ve booked for the end of August.

I assume if youre not taking a gap year you’re either going to try graduate entry dentistry or a different career path. Grad entry is ridiculously competitive and more expensive than standard entry. I’ve committed to dentistry and wouldn’t be satisfied with another career pathway either.

Getting rejected is always a risk. I kinda sucked it up and told myself to work hard enough to ensure the risk of rejection is minimal. I have my own set of personal circumstances that motivated me to get this far and failure isn’t an option atp. If you're on a similar wavelength to me then the only option we really have is to go forward.
