Masters loan eligibility question

Hi,

I'm considering doing a masters in England, and I have a couple of questions about the masters loan. It says that you are not eligible for a masters loan if you already have a masters, but how would they know if I have a masters if I'm from another country (Ireland)? Also if I had started a masters in Ireland and didn't finish it, would that preclude me from getting the masters loan? I wouldn't have a masters in those circumstances, so going by their rules, I think I should be eligible.

I'm just curious. Not intending to break the rules 😁

Thanks.

Hi there, Just to confirm you did not gain a qualification from your previous study? Did you receive funding for the previous course or was it self funded? Thanks, Angela

Hi Angela,

I don't have a Masters nor have I ever started a Masters course and not finished it. I'm just asking an entirely hypothetical question as I'm curious how your system works.

Let's say I start a Masters in Ireland, and I get free fees for that from the Irish government, but I don't finish the course. If I then apply for a Masters in England, would I still be able to apply for a UK Masters Loan in those circumstances given that I don't have a Masters (even though I did start a course).

Also if I have a Masters from Ireland, but say that I don't when applying for a UK Masters Loan, how would guys find out that I lied?

Just curious

Thanks.

Hi there,

The guidelines for funding are you're only eligible for funding for one postgraduate masters degree. So if you did start a masters degree previously (even if you didn't complete this), you wouldn't be eligible for us for funding unless you previously left this due to reasons outwith your control (and had evidence of this). This is still the case even if you self funded the degree previously. Thanks, Jason
