Does everyone go to freshers festival?

In my uni WhatsApp chat people keep posting the link to buy freshers fest tickets but I don't really want to go. Does most people go to the freshers fest or is there opportunities to do/join other activities? Thanks

No, absolutely not! I understand the struggle as I am someone who doesn't drink or party that much either  I never spent any money on the freshers club nights, really. I went to freshers fair and through there, I discovered a lot of Give It A Go events, activities held by different societies to try new things! Found this super fun and an alternate way to get to know people. They're usually free or quite cheap as well. Sometimes if your Student Union is good they also usually hold non-alcoholic freshers events. My favourite ones are movie nights or the rollerskating nights, though last year they did escape rooms as well!

I assume you mean clubbing? Not everyone will go to these things and there will be other activities - freshers fairs or any of many activities that your uni will organise.

Also, if you change your mind, don't fall for the links being advertised on whatsapp. Totally unnecessary to buy tickets this far in advance and they are also much more expensive than if you just wait.

P.S.: clubbing's overrated. Don't do anything you don't want to do in freshers, although be open to try new things. Enjoy uni

Hi there,

Don't go or get tickets to anything you don't want to do!

There are so many things going on during fresher's week, including clubbing events, university fairs, induction sessions, sport and society events, and off-campus trips. Choose what you're most interested in, and do it! It's a great time to get to know people, put yourself out there, and get more comfortable in this new place you'll soon call home.

So many people don't go to the clubbing events, and that's perfectly fine. I wasn't interested in any of them (instead, I went to all of the university fairs, some events, and explored the city with new friends), and I still really enjoyed my time! I've also heard so much about the tickets advertised being scams, so be aware of that too. There are so many people who think and feel the same about clubbing and bars, so you're bound to find your people in other events.

I hope this helps,

Isabella 🙂

Hey 👋 I'm sure there will be lots of other events and activities to get involved in! I know during freshers fortnight lots of sports and societies had free give it a go sessions, there were days out events to theme parks, shopping trips to IKEA (which was handy for bits I'd forgotten to bring!) so outside of the big fresher festival 'party' events there was lots to get involved in. I'd follow the students union social media or join any official facebook groups (be wary of unofficial ones that post spam links!) to know about things happening so hopefully you'll be able to find similar when you go to university

I hope you have a great time! University is an exciting time, I wish you the best experience 😃

Hi there,

There are so many things going on during freshers week and not every body will attend everything as there are a lot of things on. I am assuming that the tickets are for going out clubbing so if this isn't something that you are interested in then don't feel like you need to buy tickets as not everybody will get them.
Usually you can still get into most of the places that are advertised on the tickets on the day so if you did change your mind and decide you wanted to go to some events, you would likely be able to just buy a ticket on the door but this does depend on your uni and what cubs are on there. Quite a lot of people don't buy the freshers wristbands anyway so don't worry about it.
If you know who some of your flatmates are going to be, ask them if they are planning on buying the wristbands as this might affect your decision of whether you do it or not.

During freshers week, there will be opportunities to do other things that don't involve going out drinking such as going to the freshers fair which has opportunities to join societies and do volunteering. There is also usually a freebie fair where you can go and see what local things there are to you and get free things. Sometimes the Student Union puts events on too where you can go and do things such as quiz nights or other things like this so it's worth having a look what events your uni puts on and attend some of these!

Your course may also put welcome week events on too which are good to attend as you get to know some of your course mates and meet some new people, as well as being able to go to some of the uni buildings and find your way around these too.

I hope some of this helps,

Hi there!

As much as it is good to sometimes step outside your comfort zone, don’t feel any pressure to go fresher’s fest or any other events you don’t want to. There will be many other activities and events for you to enjoy. There will also be many people who don’t want to attend events like these, so don’t think you won’t meet new people if you don’t go.

Hope this helps and you have a great fresher’s week no matter what activities you choose to do. 😊

Best wishes,

Hey!

Although Freshers Fest events are usually popular, they're certainly not your only opportunity to get involved with freshers activities. After all, lots of students don't necessarily want to spend their first few weeks at university clubbing, and prefer to spend their time trying out new societies, attending the Freshers Fair, or going out to pub quizzes/cinema trips. As mentioned above, make sure to follow your university and official student union on social media and keep an eye out for any events they're organising.

Don't feel pressured to spend tons of money on your Freshers experience, or on unofficial bands/tickets to parties across campus - most activities organised by your university should be relatively affordable or even free to attend.

Hope you have fun!
Eve (Kingston Rep).

Hi Freshers Fest is usually optional at least in ARU it is is. Usually, there is a free day fair at the university that advertises multiple services such as bus fare discounts, food discounts, available societies at your university, academic support options, etc. I highly recommend you attend the day fresher's fair, especially as a 1st year student as it gives you so much useful information. However, I know that there might be some offers to go to a club night or a fresher party. Attending that is also completely optional and it's more so to socialise with other people rather than receiving information so you won't really be missing out on key information if you don't go. At the end it's your choice to attend either. If you cannot make the day fresher's fair you can always go to your student union to ask them for information.
