About me: i am a Muslim, yr12 student at sixth form. I have recently been accepted for the student leader position in my school for the upcoming school year (year 13). Although I am happy about this, there’s a downside. On Thursday (2 days away from now) my school is going to be taking y here photos of the student leaders and put it in the main sixthform area (to yk introduce the new leaders and such). However, my parents think I go to school with my hair covered/hijab and I don’t). I don’t mainly because they force it on me every second of the day and although I would wear the hijab (I have nothing against it I just hate my parents forcing me to wear it which pushes me away from wearing it), when I joined the sixthform, I found that some student from my old school came there and in my previous school I didn’t wear the hijab either so I thought it would be weird if I just switched up when I didn’t wear it in the first place. Anyways, since the sixthform is putting up our photos in the common room (me without a hijab) my parents can show up for a meeting/ parents evenings and see it and I would be in SO MUCH TROUBLE. Like I am genuinely scared. My stomach hurts while typing this just thinking

So sorry, tell the school this. To be honest, I'm pretty sure they will at least take it down, maybe take a pic of you with one and ask them to put it there instead? When is the parents evening?

I don’t want to tell the school because they would then just ask too many questions about it. It’s not that serious in my opinion but they might make it a whole thing and actually REACH OUT to my parents (and I don’t want that)

Parents evening: 11/7/24 (about 3-4 weeks)

Ok well, maybe ask them to take the picture down but don't tell them why? I am pretty sure that if you talked to somebody at the school they would want to help. It would be pretty stupid if they thought talking to your parents would make it any better. Maybe say you don't want your pic bc of privacy and stuff? I'm really sorry this is happening and I'm sure it's tough for you, but I don't think you have much option but to ask the teachers to remove the picture. You can give other reasons, maybe say I want one with a hijab bc I'm wearing one and I don't want to show my hair in a pic? Then you wouldn't have to say anything about your parents. I'd talk about it to them, if they seemed like they could be cooperative tell them about the real reason but say that you don't want the school to break confidence and tell your parents. Actually ask them before you say anything, not to tell your parents.

Okay! Thank you I’ll try! The school taking our photos INFRONT of the school so ig I’ll have to wear it for the pic. It’s just going to look really weird me deciding to wear it ONLY for the picture

Icl, try putting posters on the board sneakily before, and stick it on proper, so they don’t try and take it off to see the photo, or get your friend to do it for you. Walk past it proper quick and if they don’t know your test group, say it’s outdated or some edit, like say it was last years leader thing group photo

Maybe wear it loosely for a couple of days before they take the pic, then maybe a day after the pic then go back to normal. That way they probably won't ask questions ☺️ Really hope it goes ok for you
