Hi I did the exact same alevels as u but instead of biology I did chemistry and now I’m in my 3rd year of optometry and I completed the SED.
Personally the only module I found difficult was the maths and physics module but just the physics section, the maths section was very easy (I think u shud find it easy to considering u did alevel bio) and physics u can overcome by always going over the practise questions they provide u as the practice questions they give and the actual exam questions are VERY SIMILAR.
The biology module you will find easy as u did a level bio (for me it was okay cos the biology is very much like high school content)
The chemistry module does consist of y12 a level chem content so as u didn’t do chemistry as an a-level I recommend u spend some time on that module and watch some videos on YouTube like maths and physics tutor to get ur head around some of the difficult chemistry topics.
I think if your motivated to do optometry and u put that work in sed you should be able to get them grades and get in. Best of luck

Hi I recently just completed the science extended degree at Huddersfield, and managed to progress into optometry, if anyone has any questions about the course then fire away. No delays in answering questions as I was facing when researching about this course a year ago, I’ll try my best in answering questions the best of my ability.

Can you please give advice on why activities I should enrol in to complete my learning portfolio CPD log. As I’m confused on different activities I should enter. Also for each subject what tips would u give to achieve the 70% pass grade, mainly for maths and physics since it’s my weak spot. Any feedback would be much appreciated!

For the in test computer class is it the same as the quiz questions for chem, bio, maths and physics. Also the end of year exam for maths and physics will it be the same as the quiz questions or the seminar. As the seminar questions are a lot more challenging. For bio and chem is the end of year exam the same as a-level. I’m scared for maths and physics the most since it’s the hardest for me. Please give advice as I’m stressing out! 😭

I did the sed last year and got 80% in maths and physics module . My advice would be to keep doing the online quizzes and also attend EVERY maths and physics support session after the lectures this helped me massively and made me enjoy the module

Aston says they look at external foundation programmes. Do you think they'd look at this and give the reduced offer or not because the modules are just science and not really specific to optometry

Do mid term test result count and how hard are biology and chemistry exams ?

Hi i'm currently doing the SED and was wondering how they work out your overall grade for the SED? i know how they work out each grade from each module but im confused on how they work out you’re overall grade as i know some uni’s use different methods for this.

Optometry is a very good career, I don’t think you should let age get to you and 25 is still quite young.

Hi, congratulations
You had to do interview after completing the SE degree for optometry?

If you hit the 70% target is it guaranteed that you progress onto choose degree or can you be turned down?

It’s never happened before, but if too many people get over 70%, then they will interview for the position instead. Most of the times though, they will take on more than the allocated 15 slots as they prefer to give the position to students on SED compared to students through clearing

With the new masters syllabus, the optometry degree is 4 years which includes placement (so total 5 years with the SED)

No but they expect you to apply internally via a cover letter

Each module is weighted differently. Maths/Physics and Chemistry and weighted more heavily compared to Science Skills and Scientific Investigations (I think anyway?). As long as you aim for over 70% for each module if you want to get into optom/pharm, you should be fine
