Can I receive both tuition fee and Master's loan for masters of Architecture (Part 2)

So, I finished my part 1 last year and took a gap year to get some relevant work in Europe. I'm now deciding to do my part 2 this year in the UK.

Unfortunetely, I was rejected for the full funding (tuition fee and maintenance) because I left the UK and you are not allowed to leave the UK if you want to receive full funding.

So, I was wondering if it would be posssible to apply for the tuition fee only AND the master's loan for both the same year to do my Part 2, that way I can get funded for both years instead of one of my masters. Or are you only allowed to apply to student finance for one course a year?

Tbf, this questions would probably make sense to some that knows how architecture funding works in the UK.

Hi there,

Where were you during the year outside of the UK? What Nationality are you? Did you get an email confirming that you were ineligible?

For Part 2 of Architecture it is funded by Undergraduate (Tuition Fee and Maintenance Loan), if you're not eligible for that then you can apply for Masters funding (Contribution of total costs, there is no Tuition Fee).

Thanks,
Ross

Hi Ross,

I was in Spain during my year out. I'm Spanish. Yes, I got an email saying that I was ineligible for full funding (which is surprising given that I have been in the UK for 8 years before leaving)

In that case, Is it possible to apply twice for the Masters loan to do a Part 2 masters? Cause I know that you are only allow to receive £12K in total, and so if you are doing a 2 year course (like masters of architecture) this will split in two, which would be £6K per year, which is not enough to pay for my first year tuition fee, let alone save for living costs etc.

Do you think is possible to apply for a second masters loan after you completed your first year of masters of architecture and receive £12K for each year or is this impossible? Technically, I would have not yet receive a full masters qualification after my first year so it would be possible, Wouldn't it? Or is there another way of getting full funding for each year of your masters ?

Thanks

Hi Lucho_98,

If you are doing part 2 as a masters, you couldn't split it over the 2 different funding types, you would either need to apply for the undergraduate funding or you would apply for the Postgraduate Loan for the full duration of the masters.

Thanks, Clare
Would the OP be eligible for the part 2 undergraduate funding is they can prove their time in Spain was for work and was a temporary contract?

Hi Clare,

Yes, that's exactly my doubt. Is it possible to apply for a Postgraduate loan that covers both years of my masters degree, If so, how much could I potentially get? £12K per year?

And as you mentiond, I'm also debating wether I should apply for undergraduate funding (tuitition fee only) and get the tuition fee cover for both years and 'no' living cost OR apply for a Postgraduate loan and potentially get my both years funded but also save some of the funding for living costs as well (if that make sense) given that I would only be allow to apply to one type of funding a year.

Thank you

To be honest, I think they would take ages for them to verified this. I tried to appeal my application (in May) and I have not receive a response from them yet.

Hi,

The Postgraduate funding is for the duration of the course so the £12471 will be split over 2 years. If you made an appeal in May they can take over 40 working days to be completed and you'll be emailed once this is done.

I'd advise to await the decision of your appeal first.

Thanks,
Ross

Hi Ross,

Okay, yeah that make sense. So I guess I'm not allowed to apply to both funding types.

In that case do you think is worth applying for the undergraduate funding (tuition fee only) instead of the postgraduate loan for my Part 2 masters? given that the undergraduate loan would cover both years of tuition fee instead of the splited postgraduate loan which wouldn't cover the full masters course (which would be £9K for each year).

Thanks,

Hi Lucho_98,

Yes, if you maintained a link in the industry and are eligible under our standard residency criteria, then you can apply for undergraduate funding for both required years of the course. If you apply as normal, our assessors can confirm your eligibility and if they do clarify that you need to apply for the Postgraduate Loan due to your course, they will contact you to let you know how to move forward.

Thanks, Clare

Hi Clare,

So, they stated that I was not eligible for full funding because I will not be 3 years in the UK prior to the start of the course, so in that respect I don't think I would still be able to get the full undergraduate loan even if I maintain a link in the industry, right?

I think my only option now is to try to appeal my last application or apply for Tuition fee loan only and see what happens.

Thank you anyways for the help.

Hi Luis,

Thank you for confirming. An appeal would be the best route for you if it has already been assessed and confirmed. If you have any other queries in future, please do let us know.

Thanks, Clare
