In the UK the role is known as a sonographer. The normal path to become a sonographer is to take an undergraduate degree in something like nursing, midwifery or radiography, gain work experience and then apply for a sonography post and complete a postgraduate course in sonography. It is a very competitive field. However, this year Leeds Uni has introduced a sonography degree, which should make the process more straightforward. I suspect there will be a lot of competition for the course too. You must have at least one science at A level for this course:

The entry requirements for radiography, midwifery and nursing will be similar - although some nursing and midwifery courses will prefer or require that science to be a biological science.

Please be aware, if you pursue an undergraduate degree in medical ultrasound directly, you may not receive HCPC registration upon graduation. This registration is a requirement for some hospitals, potentially making job hunting difficult. So, when recommending this degree path, it's important to inform prospective students about this aspect.
