IB Subject Choices for Law

Hello everyone,

I am a rising Y12 in the 2024-25 academic year and I'm hoping to major in Law in the future.

My school requires students to take the IB and we don't have much options and I'm especially concerned with my choice in the Mathematics course because I don't want to risk having a bad grade by taking AI SL, but also want more doors to be opened by taking AA SL.

If anyone has any advice and/or tips, please let me know. This is much appreciated.

My subject choices are:
English Language and Literature HL
Environmental Systems and Societies HL (yes a HL course is available now)
Geography HL
Maths AI/AA SL
French B SL
Biology SL
Hi, I'm also starting IB next year so I can't give perfect advice but just based on what I know: English HL is a very good pick. There's nothing that you need beyond that, though if History is an option it might be better for law than your other HLs. I don't think they will care about which Maths you do

Okay, thank you!

The reason that I'm not taking History is because I'm already struggling with History in IGCSE with a bad History teacher. Hence, Geography as an essay-writing subject and ESS, which will explore environmental laws in the HL course.

Again, thanks for your help and good luck to you too.

There are no required IB subjects for Law.
You could be taking 3 HLs in science - it would be fine.
All the Unis are interested in is the grades.
So pick 3 HL subjects that you will enjoy studying and where you feel confident of HL 6/7.
An essay-based subject - English, Politics, History etc - can be useful for skills and for LNAT, but it is not essential. No Uni is going to be fussed which Maths SL you take for Law.

Try listening to some of these BBC podcasts - if they do not actually interest you then you may need to reconsider Law as a degree choice : BBC Radio 4 - The Law Show - Available now

Did very similar subjects and got 5/5 offers so you should be fine. Do maths AI and save yourself some time.

As above, Law does not require a specific Maths S - why would it.

I'm seeing a lot of people recommend maths AI. Personally I would recommend AA because it is (by technicality) the "harder" course. AA gives a slight more competitive edge, and unless you're bad at maths, it shouldn't be *too* hard from what I know.

For grade comparison, here's a link to the past IB statistics:

I am with you here. Optics. Really does look better on paper. I did IGCSE Add Math and Math AA SL was easy. The hard part was the IA but it was still manageable.

Ah ok, but I did not take Additional Mathematics in IGCSE, do you still recommend taking AA SL then?

It would be a huge advantage if you had taken Add Math as it's practically the same syllabus. So you'd have to ask yourself if you would be willing to take a step up in Math from IGCSE. You don't have to take AA SL if you feel less confident about it. It never hurts to have one 'easier' subject, so you can channel more time and effort over to the other harder ones.

I think this is a little misleading. An essay-based subject is generally strongly recommended for Law students, and is formally stated as such on many top UK universities' websites, so I'd take that as a soft requirement. Other than that, yes - pick 2 other HL subjects that you'll enjoy.

'Suggested' possibly, but not a requirement.

Many people in this thread are recommending Maths AA as it is seen as more 'difficult', but this is a negligible difference to Maths AI if you are applying to UK unis for law. I am starting a law degree this September, and I did Visual Art HL - which many would view as a soft subject for law. This is to say that the subjects themselves do not matter hugely (though I would recommend doing at least 1 HL subject out of History, English, Modern Languages, or Philosophy - which you are already doing), it is only the grades you achieve that matter. I did AI, but I know people who struggled with AA. Prioritise the subjects you will perform best in, as law degrees have no subject requirements. A 7 in Maths AI is far better than a 6 or a 5 in AA.

The university advisors at my school always recommended one essay subject for HL, and it has been a winner for students pursuing Law. The strongest students chose HL History and HL English. Those who hate History, take at least HL English. And their other HL would commonly be HL Econs or HL GloPo (we don't offer Philosophy or Modern Lang)

Regardless of whether an essay subject is a ‘soft’ requirement or actually helps you with getting in, I’d still say that if there’s not even one essay subject you’d be comfortable taking at HL/A level then I’d strongly reconsider whether law is the right subject for you. At the end of the day it’s an essay-based subject, and you have to be comfortable with writing quite a lot of essays if you want to succeed at and enjoy your degree.

(This is just a general comment based on the discussion upthread OP is planning on taking an essay-based HL so obviously not directed at them).
