Lancaster accommodation

Can anyone give me a brief overview of what the Lancaster accommodations are like in regards to shared bathrooms and facilities as well as showers situations?

Also is the town houses cleaned as I have read that they are not actually cleaned and become messy very quickly.

Hi,

In first year I was in Bowland Main which is standard shared. I can't comment about shared bathrooms in other colleges or town houses but I can tell you about my experience.

In my flat there was 9 of us with my flat and the flat next door (also having 9) sharing 8 showers and toilets - working out at basically 2 per shower and toilet. We unofficially had our own so my half of 9 paired off (with one group of 3) and had our own space. We couldn't leave toiletries, towels, razors etc. in them though so you do have to take them to and from your room. However, we did have cleaners in the mornings Monday to Friday and they cleaned the toilets, showers, kitchen and hallway - that may not be the case now so is something you would need to check and my friends who lived in town houses only had the bathrooms, kitchens and hallways cleaned once a week so do bear that in mind - I'm sure the accommodation team will be able to confirm this so please do contact them. By having the toilets cleaned 5 days a week they were exceptionally clean and meant we didn't actually clean the bathrooms once so I can't fault them!

In terms of the showers and toilets themselves, the town houses I've seen did have wet rooms where as we had a walk in shower with glass rather than a curtain and it was raised off the floor so the floor of the bathroom didn't get wet and they were very spacious - each "cubicle" had a shower, toilet and sink. Again, if you would rather the stand alone shower rather than wet room this is something you would need to clarify with the accommodation team too.

Hope this helps, Ella - Lancaster University Student Ambassador

Hi @Isobel_Kelly_04

Most flats will have 4-8 students sharing 1-2 showers depending on the number of people in the flat.

Cluster Flats
Grizedale: 8 students, 2 showers, 2 WCs
Pendle: 5 students, 1 WC/ shower
Pendle: 6-8 students, 2 WC/shower
Furness perimeter: 4-6 students
Bowland main/south/east: 5-18 students

Larger cluster flares with lounge/kitchen/diners
Bowland ash: 12-13 students, 4 WCs/showers
County Main: 8-13 students, 3-5 WC/showers
Furness Main: 7-11 students, 3-4 WC/shower

Townhouse
county or grizedale: 12 students, 6 WC/shower

I’ve stayed in furness perimeter if I remember correctly it was 6 people sharing 2 toilets and 2 showers. I found it really helpful that the showers and toilets were in separate rooms so you didn’t have to wait for the toilet if 2 people were in the showers at the same time.

Townhouses do not have a cleaning service so you have to maintain the cleanliness of the house as a group. It is often recommended that you come up with a cleaning schedule as a group. If you don’t keep the place clean to an acceptable standard you can get warnings from the deanary but I believe this is rare. All other accommodation on campus have cleaners for the communal areas. So shared bathrooms, hallways, kitchens etc. en-suite bathrooms and bedrooms are not cleaned by the cleaning service.

Hope this helps!

Hello!

As of this year the townhouses get "A weekly cleaning service of the kitchen and living room and monthly clean of stairs is provided during term time regular cleaning inspections are carried out by the accommodation team"

This can be seen in the Grizedale college accommodation website https://www.lancaster.ac.uk/grizedale/accommodation/

Hope this helps,

Daughter was in a townhouse. She lived on the first floor which had 4 of the 12 bedrooms on that level and 2 bathrooms. She shared a bathroom with next door but the four of them had a rule in place should theirs is occupied they could use the other bathroom. Never a problem it was always free when she wanted to use it. They don’t have cleaners so they do have to do it themselves. Group chat with a rota did work for them majority of the time.
