Film Production University Portfolio

I’m currently in year 12 doing Alevels, two of which are a photography and film studies. I’ve been looking at where to take my next steps for university and I am looking into film production, a lot of universities are requesting or at least recommending a portfolio. As it stands I don’t have any work to add to this as, especially in photography, any form of work in this field I just put towards my coursework so I just had some questions about these portfolios
- How important are these to getting into film universities?
- Can I use my A-level course work?
- How much work is expected to be in this portfolio?
- Can I use my photography for this as it is a form a visual art?

Thank you!

Hi Lizzie I'm currently in a similar position where I am looking to go to film school after my final year of highschool 6th year (in Scotland) and while I don't have the "answers" I thought I could share what I've learned so far. I've seen similar from universities recommending or requiring a portfolio to get into the program I've heard this both online and at open days. I believe it is necessary especially if you're going up against candidates who have a portfolio proving their desire to get in or at least their current skill level. I've heard of people getting into film schools with just script-based portfolios without any films. Hence, it's clear that just having something and probably a mixture of a portfolio will significantly aid your chances of getting in especially if the course is competitive.

With your question regarding if you're able to utilise your A-level photography course work although I am at this time unsure (and perhaps can answer this after visiting another university open day and talking to the professors) 🤞 at the moment I wouldn't see why not especially if your course work shows the best of your ability. If you know you got a good grade in this course, it links together well and tells a story or reveals your skill level through techniques, or editing I would definitely think it would be a good move to use your coursework in your portfolio especially if you don't know where to start.

At the time of me writing this I am still searching for the answer to your third question 😅 and perhaps I will be able to respond again after prompting a professor at an open day. 🤞

From what I've read online and the minimal advice I've seen I've come up with the following conclusions: Create a good diverse (scripts, photos, films) portfolio to send to the film schools you are applying to which shows the best of your work at that time. And my personal uneducated advice do similar to me and go to open days at the universities you wenat to go to if you haven't yet seen if you actually want to go there, ask professors at booths or talks for advice they have the best answers, not me.

Good luck and if I find out any new 'key' piece of information I'll let you know.

Hello,
Hey! I'm a film production student, and I completely understand your concerns about the portfolio. Here's some perspective based on what I've seen throughout applications and what our instructors have said:
1. How important are portfolios?
Portfolios can be quite beneficial, especially for creative subjects such as film production, because they demonstrate your skills and passion beyond grades. Some universities utilise them as part of the application process, however many recognise that students applying from A-levels may not have substantial portfolios yet. It's more important to demonstrate your talent, inventiveness, and dedication to the field than to have a large portfolio of polished work.
2. Can I use A-level coursework?
Yes, absolutely! Your photography and film studies coursework is ideal to add, especially if it demonstrates your technical ability, creative ideas, or distinct style. Unis recognise that at this point, the majority of your work is class-related, so feel free to include your greatest projects and pieces that reflect your interests.
3. How much work is expected in a portfolio?
There is normally no set amount, but aim for about 6-10 sturdy pieces. Quality above quantity is essential! Universities are searching for a portfolio that demonstrates both your technical abilities and your storytelling or visual approach. If you have any personal work or projects you're proud of, include them; otherwise, your best coursework will suffice.
4. Can I use my photography?
Yes, photography is extremely relevant! It is a visual art form in which you demonstrate your knowledge of composition, lighting, and storytelling through images, all of which transition well to cinema. In fact, it can help diversify your portfolio and demonstrate a broader skill set. If your images tell a story or have a cinematic vibe, that's even better.
If you have any additional questions or would like to learn more about the film producing course, please enquire. Good luck with your A levels and portfolio!
I hope this is helpful.
