The Student Room Group

Bangor University (wales)

Hi I’m a student going into my 1st year at this uni, and I was wondering what it’s like to study there, live there, live there if far from home, if there’s easy access to everything and if it’s worth it in general. As I’m really unsure still.

I've moved your thread to the Bangor forum to help you get replies. Have you been to open or offer holder days and chatted to current students? It might be worth another visit to make sure it is the right choice for you.

No I Haven’t gone to any proper open days yet, I have to book one in the coming months to really get a feel for the place. That’s why I’m still unsure, but I’m hoping I do like the place when I go for a proper open day, thanks

I'm going to Bangor uni in September, so not sure how its like to live there and stuff as I'm from Essex. But I went to an open day and everyone there is so nice, there are so many society to choose from. the accommodation is relatively cheap as a shared bathroom and kitchen can cost from £98 a week or an unsuits which is £150 a week. When I was there for an open day literally everything is walk able, from shops only being 10 to 15min walk and from the accommodation to main campus is only 15 min walk.

Thanks for giving me some info, I’ve only ever visited there for like 3 hrs and didn’t get to see the uni properly as it wasn’t an open day, I’ve not gone to see my accommodation yet but I already have one booked. I didn’t get to see a lot of the shops and stuff bc we weren’t there for long, so I’m Hoping to go to an open day in August.

Hi, I teach at Bangor University so if there's anything specific you want to know just ask.
I definitely would urge you to book onto one of the upcoming open days and spend longer here

Thank you and yess, I know I need to really go to an open day. Also I don’t know if you know but I really need to know who the head for criminology and criminal justice is at the uni considering I’m taking that subject and I’m still unsure who it is.

I'm a returning student at Bangor. I can say that all the staff I have met have been super friendly and helpful. It's a really good place as everything is accessible by walking. The uni itself is made up of multiple buildings dotted around Bangor. Just a warning though, it's hilly 😆 but there are lifts you can take from the town centre level up to the main arts building through Pontio. This will be my first year in student accommodation in Crafnant on Ffriddoedd Village. However, I've spoken to some of the students around there. They said the security is excellent, and maintenance for any issues is relatively quick. Just a heads up, their laundry room can be very busy and the gym can be full with the university sports teams. So choose your time wisely if you plan to stay in Ffriddoedd Village. I don't know much about St.Marys Village apart from it's on quite a steep hill. I moved from Essex and was caught off guard by the bus timetable. Depending on where you are going, they can be up to an hour apart. The student services for the university are excellent, any problems they are more than happy to help. If you plan to take the bus to uni, there is a bus ticket called a student weekly, costs £14, make sure you have your ID. Not sure about the nightlife but from what I've heard, it's pretty good. At least from my experience, all my lectures were recorded and accessible on my account. Pretty good recordings but It's heavily recommended to attend the lectures as much as possible. As I can't think of anything else rn, I would also give you this advice my tutor and lecturers gave me. The lectures are important, but also make sure you have fun. Uni is about learning and experiencing, they have tons of societies. Last bit also, with assignments. Don't be afraid to get your lecturers to see them before you submit. Normally they can give you advice on improvements. They are not there to catch you out, they want you to pass, so pester them all you like (within reason) XD (sorry for any grammar or spelling mistakes, I'm an engineer, that's my excuse XD)

Thank you so much for all the info, it was rlly helpful. I should be living in gwynant ffriddoedd village when I go. Just wondering what are the societies like if you know, also when do you start to meet your housemates, is it hard to take all your luggage with you too when you first go, and is it very expensive or just average? I’m asking about the luggage bc I live quite far currently from there soo. Thanks.

Hi @Diana-starr20

Great to hear this. I studied at Bangor for 3 years and loved every minute, I now work for the University, so they must have done something right because they can't get rid of me haha!

We do have an open day coming up on the 17th of August and you can register in the link below:

I don't have much to say about the uni as I'm also going there this September! I'm also moving quite far as I'm from Warwickshire, so not as far as you, but an expenisve train journey home. From what I've seen of Bangor though is its a quiet town, not as many shops as where I'm from but likely has the necessities you'll need, but I know the surrounding area of Snowdonia is absolutely gorgeous, so at least there's that. The uni buildings are also nice and I get a nice community feel from it when I went there.
