module fail

i am currently taking 3 compulsory modules this semester - i think i may have failed one of them. my uni does allow resits but it is capped at 40%

my module consists of two parts
essay - 80%
presentation - 20%

i did not do the presentation and i got 48% on the essay - i have passed the essay but i think i failed the overrall module because i need 40% to pass

if I was to retake the essay - i cannot get more than 40% the second time and there's no point because I've got higher

I don't think i can do the presentation as i failed to attend the first time

what are my options now?

It's understandable to feel anxious in this situation, but you can still address it. First, I would recommend you reach out to your module tutor as soon as possible to explain that you missed the presentation and ask if there's any way to make up for it or if there's an alternative assessment available. Beware or check your university's policies on resits and missed assessments, and check if there are special considerations for extenuating circumstances. If your university allows, see if you can redo just the presentation part of the module, since you've already passed the essay. If you need to resit the entire module and it's capped at 40%, remember that passing is still a step forward. I would highly encourage you to contact your academic advisor contact your academic advisor to help navigate university policies, and Meanwhile, prioritize your other compulsory modules to ensure you pass them without issues.
Best of luck to you!

You'll need to check your university policies on retaking modules. Usually reassessment will be for the whole grade of the module rather than reattempting parts, in my experience (e.g. a module assessed by coursework and exam would be reassessed usually by only exam and the exam result would then be 100% of the final grade - in this case if assessed by coursework and presentation it may well be the coursework grade would be 100% of the module result). Note also normally the 40% cap is for the module overall, not individual pieces of work, i.e. to enable to students to get the minimum pass grade in the module.

You should speak with your personal tutor about how the process works and what your options are.

Hi there,

This really depends on your university policies as these can differ from university to university. I would encourage you to get in contact with your tutor as soon as you can as they will know the policy and how you would go about fixing this. You could ask if there is any way you can retake the presentation as even with the cap this would be could be enough to allow you to pass. It's worth contacting them as this is the way that you would find out your options and you can start on sorting it out so you pass.

You could also contact your academic advisor if you have one or your university help team as they will also be able to help you with this and can explain the guidelines to you. They will know whether the whole module is capped at 40% or the individual assignments within the module which should help you in knowing what to do next.

They may get in contact with you too about reassessments and how to go about doing this as there are probably other people on your course who are in your position and might need to retake parts of the module. If so, this would answer your questions but they may not contact you for a while so it is probably best if you contact them first so you know what you are doing and it also shows that you are taking initiative.

In general, it's worth contacting your tutor if you are ever struggling with an assignment or if you don't think you are going to be able to take an assignment/do a presentation as this way they can hep you out ahead of time so you don't end up in this situation. I have found my tutors to be really helpful so I am sure yours would be too in answering any questions you might be unsure about!

I hope some of this helps,

48% for the 80% essay gives you 38.4% for the module overall. Depending on the university's regulations that might be enough for a condoned fail -- i.e. they award you the credit for the module even though you failed it.

At this stage you just need to wait and see what the decision of the progress board/exam board is. If they require you to do a reassessment then they get to decide what format that takes, and it might take a different format to the original assessment you failed.
