Student Finance Eligibility

Hi there! I am a UK National and I have applied to study a Law Masters conversion course - I'm hoping to start this September 2024. I have been working abroad in South Korea since 2021, there has been a short break within this time where I returned to the UK. My work contract finishes in March 2025, and I am coming back to the UK permanently. My question is, will I be eligible for student finance and is anything I can do to support my application?

Hi there,

Was your break in residency only temporary?

Thanks, Drew

My short break to the UK in 2022 was temporary, yes, but I will be moving home permanently March 2025.

My work in South Korea has been on year-by-year basis and this is my final contract. Thanks!

Hi there,

So while you have been living in South Korea it was not a temporary basis?

Thanks, Drew

Hi there,

You will need to submit an application and then you will need to upload evidence to show us your break in residency was temporary. We can accept evidence such as temporary visas or temporary work contracts. You can also provide evidence that shows you were still linked to the UK and this can be bank statements or evidence that you were still paying bills in the UK and always had an intention to return to the UK.

Thanks, Drew

Hi Drew,

Thank you for your detailed information. What can I do if my application immediately says “ineligible”? My permanent address is in the UK, but I will be outside of the UK when the course actually starts. There was no where to also submit documents to prove that my move has been temporary. Will this need me to reapply or do I need to contact SFE customer service?

Kind regards

Hi there,

So you will not be ordinarily resident in the UK on the 1st day of 1st academic year of your course?

Thanks, Drew
