The Student Room Group

Academic Misconduct

The allegation relates solely to question 3 of the Take and Do assessment. It is alleged that you have colluded with another student (herein identified as Student A) in the preparation of the answer to that question. In comparing your answer with that of Student A, there are apparent and unusual similarities (please see appendices). Both answers have used the same authorities, and the basic structure of the answers is the same throughout, although the actual wording varies, and there are minor variations of detail. The striking similarity is in the errors which both answers contain. The principle in Wilkinson v Downton is not relevant as the interaction between the Mayor and the character Wilco is a potential assault, but does not meet any of the specific criteria of Wilkinson. The introduction of negligence is completely unnecessary, as is the introduction of defamation. The introduction of trespass to land, while not wrong, Is somewhat unusual, although one or two other candidates also mentioned it. It does however provide a further point of similarity. Overall it is the combination of a number of shared significant errors which is indicative of improper collusion. NLS It is asserted that the extent of the similarities (both in content and format) cannot be explained by way of coincidence.

I received this email from university and although i was in the same room/house as student A because of some family problems i did not physically copy there work i did skim at the end to make sure it made sense but in no means did i copy them i was hoping for some advice as to what to say as i have a meeting and I’m an emotional wreck right now

You're going to have that meeting to attend and likely be asked to explain what you did. Whatever you do, under no circumstances should you attempt to lie or deceive the review panel, even by omission.

If you have read have someone else's work, used some of their ideas and not referenced them as the author, it is likely you have broken some very real academic rules. But there is a difference between doing this entirely by accident or without thinking, or genuinely using it in attempt to create work to pass assessments in manner that is entirely dishonest from the outset.

It is possible for people get caught in this kind of problem where they have taken part in some group work or discussion or brainstorming session that was held as a group and several people have included ideas that were generated collectively. But that is very different to having content that is very similar to other people's work.

I had a resit lab report because I couldn’t submit the original one on time and didn’t ask for mitigating circumstance so when the lab report resit came in I looked at the questions and saw the part A was the same and ignorantly assumed part B would be the same unfortunately it wasn’t. Since I already almost finished the first lab report but didn’t submit I decided to finish it up and submit it for the resit turns out it was marked and the part B was changed and I had similar to the same graph as someone who had already submitted and same screenshots with that person but because it’s statistics we would naturally all have the same answers but given the part B was changed I shouldn’t have the same answers as the original part B lab report so they have suspicions that I have been involved in plagiarism from the work of the first person there’s more to this the graph are similar probably because the person showed me how to do it and I did exactly how I was shown but I cannot prove this as I can’t access my original copies and it makes me look very guilty

Keep saying your side of the story no matter what. They can’t prove you had ill intentions
