Are A levels actually hard?

Pls don’t be offended - I’m just asking genuinely, are A levels actually as difficult as people make them seem? Because I know people who achieved 6s and 7s at GCSEs and ended up getting 4A* at A levels. Also A levels are just 3/4 subjects compared to the 12 subjects at GCSEs so surely they should be easier in terms of revision?
