AS level Japanese

Does anyone know if Edexcel offers AS level Japanese? I think they only offer GCSE / A level, but I'm not sure.

I am not sure that there is an AS level, however, I took a similar exam, Russian A level Edexcel and it had 3 exams. I don't think you could split those exams into two (AS and A2), so you have to take them all at once in year 13. I just googled it and yes, Japanese Edexcel A level still exists, but it also has 3 exams and I don't think you can split it. I hope this helps! Also if you are planning to take the exam outside of your college (like I did), don't panic if your exam center doesn't offer this subject. You can bring in your own Japanese tutor (I hired one just for this exam) for the oral exam and the invigilator will just stay in the exam room. For the other 2 papers, you don't even need a Japanese tutor. If you have any extra questions, I am happy to help you!

Hi, thank you for your reply! I actually haven't even done my GCSEs, I was just wondering hypothetically. I don't think I'd like to do it as a full A-level, so thank you for informing me. Could I ask which other A-levels you did?

I did Russian, English Language, and Biology. I know, it's a weird combo, but the country I applied to doesn't have any subject requirements as long as I get good grades, so I chose the subjects I like. Still, if I were to study in the UK, I would do history instead of biology if I applied to a modern languages degree (one of my uni choices) and if I decide to study sciences I would forget about russian and english and choose chem and maths instead. As for Japanese, or any foreign language, I don't think that you can split it, so there is no point in studying Japanese if you don't want to do a full A level.

I've never heard of anyone doing those three! Thank you for your input.

Haha I know, me neither. In Spain as long as you get good grades and pass the subjects needed for your course in your entrance exams, they don't care what A-Level subjects you have. So, I picked the subjects where I knew I'd get the highest grades.

Hi! I did Edexcel GCSE Japanese and am planning to do the A Level. I’m pretty sure they don’t have an AS Level, primarily due to the kanji requirements. If you are considering taking the A Level, just be aware that you’d have to learn about 200 GCSE kanji alongside the required 400ish for A Level. Wishing you the best of luck!

Hi - thanks for the information, it helps! I'm unaware if you're a native speaker or not, but how did you find the GCSE?

I’m not a native speaker but I really enjoyed the GCSE! The hardest part about Japanese is definitely the kanji; memorising them is a bit of a chore. Hiragana and katakana (the other two alphabets) are super simple and surprisingly easy to get the hang of. And unlike other languages, Japanese doesn’t have a future tense so you only have to worry about past and present. Words also aren’t gendered.

I don’t think it’s as hard as you would expect it to be but you definitely have to be keen and passionate about learning it. Grade boundaries are decent - I’m hoping for a 9 in August!
