UCLAN Speech and language masters September start. Looking to connect with others!

Hello!

I’m starting the SLT masters at UCLAN in sept and I’m just putting a general post out there to see if anyone else starting would like to connect?

Hopefully this reaches the right people!

Hi @Jpcg91,

How are you? It's great to hear that you will be starting on our MSc Speech & Language Therapy course this September.

I just wanted to message and say that if you have any questions about the course or life here on campus, do let me know and I'd be happy to help.

All the best and we hope to welcome you onto campus soon. 😊

Sarah

Hi!

I'm starting in September! Getting super nervous now as the time draws closer but I'm sure that's normal 😬 How're you feeling?

Hey @fovrthdimension,

It's completely normal to feel like this before starting university and trust me you aren't alone in feeling this way. Have you had chance to meet others who will be starting in first year this September? I found connecting with other students really helped settle my nerves before starting.

There are several groups you can join where you can meet those who will be on your course or staying in your halls if you are choosing to stay on campus.

Are there any questions I can help with to help ease any nervous you have about starting with us this September? 🙂

All the best.
Sarah

I really wised to get enrolled in this program but unfortunately the IELTS band 8 requirement doesn't let me do so.

Me too!! I've handed in my notice at work now and it's all feeling a bit too real (I'm also struggling to find somewhere to live near Preston but that's another story 😅)

Has your place been fully confirmed yet? I think they're just waiting on my DBS now

Hi! I’m starting too and so excited! I won’t actually be starting on 2nd as I originally was told the start date was 23rd and then only told 2 weeks ago that it had moved to 2nd so I’ve had to rearrange some things but I’ll be there from 9th! Looking forward to meeting you all

Oh, I hope you find a place soon! 🤞Are you coming from far?

I'm in the process of looking for a part time job, hoping I'll be able juggle it all.

Yeah, it was my last day at work last week and now it feels like a waiting game 😬 I'm actually quite happy they've brought forward the start date! I'm ready to get stuck in!

I'm not actually sure what stage I'm at...I've sent off my DBS and done that Occupational Health questionnaire. Still waiting to hear from Student Finance and it's stressing me out.

Hey! Yeah I was quite surprised when I got that email, glad you've managed to sort things out and will be there from the 9th 🙂

Yeah I was a bit upset at first as I had September all planned out with a holiday and finishing work and my childcare all sorted etc but once I’d got my head around it I’m actually glad too as I’m so ready to start 🤩

Thank you!! Only an hour away but I'd rather be closer to Preston just for my own peace of mind (and the petrol prices may kill me on a student budget!!)

Same but I was shocked by the email saying it was the 2nd! Thought I had more time to prepare and now I'm panicking!

SFE got my app through quite quickly so you should be absolutely fine! Let's hope it's all sorted soon 🥳

Hi there,

Have any of you applied for funding for the course yet? I just read on this thread https://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=7393576&page=23 that the student loans company will only fund up to £9,250 of the tuition fees, not the full £11,000. Also just wondering if you have to actually take out a maintenance loan to be awarded the NHS Learning Support Fund or if you can just take the tuition fee loan out (and work part-time to fund yourself)?

Any info you might have would be great as I need to figure out how to fund myself without being massively in debt!

Hiya! Yes you have to self fund the different between the £9250 (maximum loan) and £11,000 fee- we had this confirmed by UCLan themselves. It’s not classed as an ‘accelerated’ course so isn’t eligible for bigger loan amount unfortunately. If you’re a UCLan alumni you will get 20% discount on the fee so it would be £8,800 per year- dunno if that applies to you?)

Re. the NHS LSF- you can still get it even if you decide not to actually take out the SFE
maintenance loan- but you will just still have to prove you’d be eligible for the loan if that makes sense. I’m not sure what the process is on that but you can find out more info on the LSF website.

Hope this helps!

Hi, I don't know the answer to the second question - but I do know you will need to self fund the remaining difference as SFE will only fund up to £9250.

Regarding the second q, I read on another SFE post that you can basically apply for the maintenance loan as some universities require this to be able to give the bursaries, and in the amount it asks how much you want to borrow, you write 0. However, I am unsure whether this applies to the NHS bursary as I was under the impression it was Not Means Tested.
