history personal statement

i'm year 12 taking history, economics, math and physics. just finished AS exams and now preparing for personal statements. i'm going to apply for history, or at least history related as my parents believe 'history doesn't have job prospect'. my first choice is university of Manchester, but the problem is i don't have any thing to write in the PS. i didn't join clubs, never worked on essay competitions, in another word i'm a blank space in that. my own solution is to read books/journals and construct my own understanding of history and really show that in the PS. the point is i don't know how to do that by myself, and i'm afraid i don't have much time.

the other problem is, right now i'm not sure what my predicted grades would be, so i also face the choice of either just stick to UOM step by step, or take the risk of focusing for UCL.

if anyone that have the experience of humanity majors (history would be better), please give me some advice, thank you for that.

I'm going to uni for history next year, and I also didn't do any clubs or anything. I talked mainly about my favourite topics in history classes and spoke about what I liked from history books I'd read (I hadn't read them all the way through, I even spoke about one I'd read 1 chapter of). You can also talk about any interesting youtube videos or documentaries you've seen (although I wouldn't say it's from a youtube video).

You have months to submit your application rather than "not much time".

Why do you have to focus on Manchester or UCL?

You don't need clubs and societies - what you do need is evidence of relevant academic interests beyond your A level syllabus. Which eras or topics within History really interest you, what additional reading have you done around this, what can you discuss in your PS to show this this.

And the deadline for applications for History at Manc and UCL etc is JANUARY next year, so the idea that you 'don't have much time' is a bit over dramatic.

"not much time' because i'm not confident about myself and i've got asian parents, which means other universities besides UOM and UCL would be 'not cool to show your relatives'.

i understand the importance of knowledge beyond syllabus, i'm just struggling with how to exactly achieve this. by this i mean what should i look for in the books i read and how to transform that into my own understanding of that topic and show it in my PS.

ik my descriptions are dramatic, but i was told to summit earlier, definitely should not be later then December, i think that' s because international applications work different? Also people are just so ahead of schedules in my school which kind of made me nervous and felt like i should hurry up.

thanks for giving me the advice!

This Oxford Uni guide - good for all Unis - has some advice about 'how to incorporate this stuff into a Personal Statement' - worc.ox.ac.uk/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/Guide-to-Super-curriculars.pdf

Hii, i did a personal statement for ucl and manchester with a history related subject and got into both. I didn't do all those things either, just watched a documentary, read a part of a book (it can literally be one chapter) and spoke about what ive learnt in class. Remember to link all these topics together -- it doesnt have to be the same historical event -- just connect it into a 'semantic field' to show why history interests you as a subject.
