I forgot to report a change in circumstances to PIP

Hello,

I just checked the news about pip and it reminded me of something I forgot to do. I started university last September and didn't tell DWP about my change in circumstances as I kept getting nervous and putting it off.

My reasons for receiving pip never changed, I never got better or even moved out of my family home due to the severity of the disability. I'm in the exact same place disability wise as I was before uni, the university made lots of accomodations for me to even atten. Even then my attendance is abysmal due to the disability.

Now I have myself in a state because of forgetting to inform them. My anxiety is dreadful and when I looked up how to do it, people on other threads were talking about jail time and now I'm terrified they'll send me to jail because I forgot to report student status.

What do I do? Have I really cocked up?

Hi,

Did anybody answer you? Are you OK?

My understanding, as a parent of a child who has pip similarly to you, is that if your condition hasn't changed, you are entitled to PIP whether you are a student or not.

You can make an appointment with your GP about your anxiety regarding this. Do this soon. Ask them to do a letter confirming your diagnosis and explaining your present high levels of anxiety (ie, your condition is worse at the moment). Get the letter addressed 'To whom it may concern' on letterheaded paper. It only needs to confirm how your condition affects your daily life. Keep this on file, with copies. Provide it to PIP if requested.

Paying £30ish or so for this letter is peace of mind for you. The letter can then be used to apply for any disability access requirements, or for updating your present condition with PIP. If PIP write directly to your GP, this letter will be on top of your file for them to refer to.

Your disability continues wherever you are, but your home address is your main residence and no doubt you have a raft of DSA stuff, including their assessment of needs, which you can supply PIP with if necessary. You probably have the ability to attend lectures online, so you can do that, and lots more, from a safe home space. Do not despair about attendance. Lots of people without disabilities attend no lectures in person. It only becomes an issue if you have problems doing the work.

If they review you, you can send this paperwork. If telling them triggers a review, same.

If a review leaves you feeling this scared, you can ask a family member to speak with you or on your behalf.

Should you tell them? Up to you. But if it triggers a review you'll have the GP letter ready and your condition hasn't changed insofar as it affects your daily life.

Nobody is going to send you to jail. Get the letter. Make the call. Deal with any review that comes by proving help at Uni/attendance figures (you can get a copy from Uni).

Good luck - hope you come back and tell us how it goes. My child dropped out at the last Uni attempt and is hoping to stick with the present attempt. Well done to you for the huge effort you are making. Keep working through it - you're a star.

Your relevant circumstances haven't changed. At all.

From what I can tell, your 'circumstances', due to the lack of change in your condition and how it's affecting you, haven't changed enough to warrant an actual update in the PIP forms.

Edit: I know this is a late reply, just wanted to make this clear.
