Any recs? Anything business related?

The problem with recommending business books for business management degrees is that a lot of the business books that you do come across are for casual reading, suited for people who are street smart and learn business on the street/through experience. The academic style of business isn't typically well written and isn't typical in standard business books - they are typically very dry and come across as very egocentric, in my opinion.

You're typically better off reading/revising Business Studies A Level.

My fear is that if I recommend good business books based on advice that has been tested by practitioners, it can affect how you approach your academic studies. Should you wish to read business books suited for casual reading, I recommend reading them after uni and not use the material in your academic degrees.

Hi @Avz4XO

I have just finished my first year studying Business Management, so I would love to give you some advice. I had not previously studied business before beginning my degree, however these books really helped advance my understanding.

These are my personal recommendations:

Management: an introduction
Author: David Boddy
Edition: Seventh

Management principles: a contemporary edition for Africa
Author: PJ Smit
Edition: Fifth and Seventh

Management history: text and cases
Author: Morgan, Witzel

I read parts of these academic texts throughout my first year, which gave me a great insight into the foundations of management. I am not saying it's essential to read these texts before you head to university, in fact most courses will give you a reading list when you start which can differ for each universities. However, taking a look at these books may give you an excellent foundation to begin studying business management.

Hopefully you find this helpful,
-Sophia (Business and Management)

Hello, Coventry University Student Ambassador here!

As a Business Management student, here are some good books I can recommend based on my experience:

1.

"Management: A Practical Introduction" by Angelo Kinicki and Brian K. Williams

2.

"A guide to the project management body of knowledge", Project Management Institute (2017)

3.

"Financial Management: Core Concepts" by Raymond Brooks

4.

Global strategic management (Fifth edition) by Lasserre, P., & Monteiro, Felipe, author. (2023).

In general any book that deal with the main topics of business management would be very beneficial to read, these involve strategy, marketing, finance, human resources, technology and equipment, and operations.
There are some books that specifically discuss strategy, human resource, or process management, so keep an eye out for specific books, if you are interested in a particular branch of management.

Kind Regards,
Bianca
