Help. Retaking yr12???

My school doesn't offer retakes for y12 and I genuinely don't know what to do. I've slacked off this year and had some personal issues that have been in the way of my studies, yes, but now I feel like I can't so anything. They either want me to progress to yr13 or out and I don't know if any other schools would admit me. I'm in a dire situation rn. I want to continue alevels but the head of sixth form doesn't encourage or anyone else. I feel so hopeless. Any advice or I just don't deal with it?? Idk what to do

I forgot to add, I don't exactly have the grades to progress into yr13 which is why they want me out. I'm failing in life

Change sixthform or go to a sixthform college or just a college or sit privately. Other schools will definitely accept you, especially if you explain that you had other circumstances

Thats the problem I don't think any other sixth-forms or colleges will accept me this late like interviews are already over and alot of ppl have gotten their offers. Plus if my school doesn't do it what other school do?? Plus idk if they accept retakers and I haven't met one personally

Sometimes sixthform colleges or colleges will let you in without an interview if you have the GCSE grades. Also you can ask your school to ask on your behalf. I know some people who changed schools in August in year 12 and they got in. It might be worth a try

I can try that but I don't think it'll get anywhere bc the head of sixth-form doesn't believe that I'm suited for alevels in the first place and just wants me to give up. Thanks for the advice anyway

Hi there. First of all I want to say that sounds like a difficult situation. I have read the previous conversation and it seems like it is difficult for you to change sixth forms/colleges. The next best thing I can say really is to progress to Year 13. If you don’t feel ready for your A Levels at the end of the school year then perhaps retake Year 13 or retake your A Levels (which is what I did). This Summer maybe try to get organised with revision, may I ask what subjects you are doing? Physics and Maths Tutor offers a lot of revision and resources for a wide variety of subjects so perhaps check it out and do a bit of work every day/ every 2 days during Summer? Make sure to rest as well and relax as you mentioned personal issues so of course that comes first.

Ik the next best thing is to progress to yr13 but I don't have the grades for it as it is so I'm going to get kicked out if I fail my mocks idk how I'm going to handle that if I'm barely handling this rn

I think you should discuss your concerns with your head of sixth form/teachers. They will want the best for you and can perhaps guide you/support you with revision. I don’t think they will kick you out as long as you prove you are trying your best. I think if it all goes wrong then just retake your A Levels or year 13, just prove your teachers wrong and show how hard you can work.

What subjects are you doing and what is it that you want to do in the future? Some context will help

They can't get rid of you for academic reasons - it's illegal. They have to let you progress to Year 13.

I have discussed it with my sixth form head earlier this year bc my grades were so bad and was presented the possibility of getting kicked out from there. I don't think it helps much for context, but I'm doing geography, maths, and economics rn. I would like to go to uni for an economics degree, but it's probably not going to happen anymore. Apparently, I'm incapable of achieving the said grades for it

Don’t lose hope I’m sure you can do it. I think you should try to create a timetable for this Summer. Maybe aim to do 3 hours of revision a day, or if that’s too much just half an hour per subject. I can advise some good youtubers/websites if you need them? Don’t give up just because your teachers won’t help you. I believe in you and you need to believe in yourself. If you want to study Economics then you need to believe that you can. Set realistic goals for yourself and try to catch up with revision, and if everything goes wrong then just retake. You will get into uni for Economics, just push yourself and you can do it I promise.

Thanks for the kind words. I really could do that if I had the chance but now it's upto the school if they let me

Hi, I know this is an old post but can you talk to me about how you retook your A-levels/yr13? I’m in year 13 and have a bad feeling i’m going to fail all my mocks (bio, chem, psych) (they have alr moved me onto AS for psych) and my school will not let me sit the A-level paper, only AS. I want to retake year 13 at a different school but my school said it’s unlikely they will take me, and my own school doesn’t allow students to retake year 13. Also, since i will be over 18 does it cost money to redo a year of year 13?

You could go to a college, usually you won’t have to pay if your parents earn under a specific amount which is around £21,000

You also don’t have to pay if you have never sat your A levels before. You don’t have to pay for the first attempt. So if you’re thinking of resitting and don’t want to pay, you can choose not to sit your exams this year. However, I would speak to my school about this option. Or you could change to BTEC because a lot of good unis like Birmingham or QMUL accept BTEC. Or you could enroll in an access to HE course. If you’re still in year 12, you can join another school for year 12 or college. Or you could revise really hard now and see what you get in your end of year mock exams.
