Hi, yes I would say it is a legitimate reason but you would need the support of your school/ a referee to back up this claim. Mental health and depression affected my results, and when I applied to uni my referee had to write a section as to how and why this affected me, therefore perhaps discuss this with your school.
Its documented by my GP and like 4 months before A-levels I started seeing a mental health professional about it. Im not sure but I also got rest and movement breaks, a smaller venue for my A-level exams...this helped but my anxiety was still overwhelming and this wasnt just during exams but perisistantly over the last 2 years.

How do I go about this? Like do I tell them to add it into their refrence? I am planning to apply to uni with the retakes also because of the stress-it was too much to even apply, I felt no uni could ever want me esp as I had low grade predictions...anyhow I am planning to come in to the school and ask for a refrence as I need one and school said before they would provide it...

Hi, on your UCAS application, there is a section that your referee has to fill in, which usually includes confirming predicted grades, and writing a reference. If you have extenuating circumstances, there is a specific section where they would write about what you experienced and how this affected your grades. It is not part of the reference. Also I would suggest that when you reapply you should contact each uni individually. Usually they have an email or a form you need to fill in about extenuating circumstances, where you will write about what happened and you may need the support of a referee or documentation to back up your claim. I hope this makes sense.

Would I have to get the support of a referee when I am applying, or can I do so earlier? And who owuld be the referee...my teachers? Thanks

Yes you would need the referee to write about the special circumstances as the section is included with the other information they need to fill in. Your teacher can be your referee, my referee was my head of sixth form. I’d suggest emailing them so that they are aware of what happened and how this affected your grades. Also when you contact a uni individually the form usually requires the referee/teacher to write about why you got lower grades/ why you are retaking etc.
