S6 wanting to go edinburgh uni

I want to study English Literature at Edinburgh Uni.

Is this a good course?
I'm currently taking; AH English, Higher Art, Higher Psychology and Higher Modern Studies.

All I need is two more Highers to get the grades for this course but my main problem is writing the personal statement. I understand the severity of writing these statements, and I understand the difficulty of getting into this specific university.

Are there any key things I should mention in my personal statement that would make me stand out? I've done a lot of volunteering work and I've recently started volunteering with a local newspaper so I think that would definately help with the course I'm wanting to do.

Any advice at all would be greatly appricated; about personal statement, about S6, about university life itself, literally anything xxx

Hii I can't give English lit specific advice (but i did do AH English) because I applied for Politics but I would say that mentioning extracurriculars like those you mentioned would look good as long as you relate it to your course. I would also recommend that you look into the Edinburgh English lit course in detail if the website allows you, look into the course structure for this year on the course page, first make sure that you like it, and then tailor your personal statement to the course (if that makes sense haha) as that is what I did when I wrote my ps. Another thing is that last October at the open day, the arts and humanities admissions speaker said that they prioritise the highest grades first and only use the personal statement to choose between people with the same grades, and sometimes they don't even read them. You don't need to include any cliche statements or try to write in an 'academic' style, just get straight to the point and use clear language as you only have 4000 characters, admissions officers want to understand your statement at first reading, and you need to show that you are passionate about this course and demonstrate how you would be an engaged student on the course bc that's what they want I hope this helps a bit lol. The final thing is that Edinburgh takes so long to give you a decision on your application so be ready for that, I applied in November and didn't get an offer until the middle of April it was a very painful wait
