For the guys

Hey guys,

Why does it seem that every guy nowadays don't have any hobbies except going to the gym?

My last ex-boyfriend, the only thing he talked about was going to the gym all the time and it got so boring, I just lost interest in him. I've started dating a few people now and even tried some dating apps but most of the guys when I ask them what are their hobbies or what they like to do, they would just say 'mostly going to the gym'. Surely, there must be lots other things you do right, for example my hobbies are baking, playing chess, piano and sometimes tennis and I've got a full time job now.

So I want to ask the guys, what kind of hobbies do you have? I mean there must be other things you're interested in right? And please don't say going to the club, bars or pub.

Your responses will be very much appreciated.

I don't really have a lot of free time. When I do, I would be interested in the following:

Learning stuff e.g. languages, instruments, coding, cooking, bush craft/survival training, videography, sports, tea, coffee, sake, mixology, magic, dance, motorcycling, etc. - usually stuff I wouldn't want a career in

Catching up with friends

Gym

Read - a variety of subjects

If I have more money and free time, I would do the following (mostly hypothetical):

Travel

Volunteer

Experience days

Writing e.g. books, guides, blogs, screenplays, plays

Make a short film

Compose a few music pieces

Growing own food

Investments

Speak to OAPs

Theatre workshops

Coding and engineering projects

Build treehouses, cabins, teepees etc.

Meet a lot of new people with very diverse backgrounds

Mentor people - strictly not teach

If possible, build a small school and a doctor's clinic in a third world country

Plant trees of local species in an area

Watch top 100 films

Read top 100 novels

Paint watercolour pieces and drawing

Eating particular foods

Tbh I think with a lot of 'self improvement' hobbies people tend to not shut up about them. Like I stretch my legs to ease sciatica pain every night... I don't call it a hobby 😄

I'm not sure what people you've met but the men I've met generally have barely spoken about going to the gym. My hobbies are mostly related to vehicles, such as cars and ships and trains. Yes, I am a nerd.

I love football, technology, cars, working out and spending time with friends. Some people like to make one thing about them their whole personality so I can see why it would be irritating.

If we didn't go to the gym girls would say we're not fit. I go to the gym because I like to have a muscle chest and abs to show, at the beach in summer and girls appreciate. I never heard girls complaining about hobbies when they watch my body

While I am an avid gym goer, I consider myself to have a far broader range of interests.

For instance, I like to relax by watching stuff like this

Sure visually very appealing however in long term relationships it may come across as one dimensional. I dont know you so i can't comment on you but there are a lot of men who go to the gym a lot where there is very little to them and that jsut doesnt mentally stimulate me which is something i look for in a relationship

Hi Doomotron

I have 1 of your interests as a hobby aswell, the railway both real and in model form but for me, unless I meet anybody with the same interest, I rarely talk about it otherwise as I was picked on all through my schooling years ( age 5 - 16 ) and seen as the odd 1 out.

I still build models of them but aswell as those I do have other interests and this is where I can bring everyone into it because not only do I have the interest / hobby about the aforementioned railway, I have had an interest / passion for volcanoes since I was 7 when I saw Mount Saint Helens blow it's northern slope out in 1980, now I am studying with the OU to get a Geology / Volcanology degree because I also want to turn that interest / passion into a job.

My other hobby which I have been doing since I was 8 is that I am a musician of 43 years experience, I'm a guitarist, bassist, piano and electric keyboard player ( once had a go at drums but couldn't maintain coordination ), my dad started me off, showing me a few chords on his guitar and literally from then onwards, I practically taught myself to play and as my dad was tone deaf, as my experience grew, I ended up with the musical ability to listen to a song, pick out what key the song is in and showed him the chord format and next is we'd be learning it.

My experience was brought out into the open when a track I recorded was sent to a record company in the USA and actually made it onto an album oddly enough about the railway which also involved songwriters, bands and solo artists in the states aswell. Because of a dishonest music club chairman, I never received anything royalty wise but hey, music is a savage business to be part of.

My apologies, I'm rabbiting on now but that's my interests anyway.

In the long term we will all be dead. If we don't go to the gym girls would say we're unfit and reject us. And rightly so because we don't like fat and unfit girls either. Girls too are obsessed with their weight, spend hours for make up and talk mostly about gossip and clothes, so girls don't want intellectual boring things either. For most people looks are the point for relationships

To be fair, what would the alternatives be realistically? Going down the pub and wasting a weeks wages? Following a football team that never wins and always disappoints? Driving like a maniac round the town centre thinking you're Lewis Hamilton doing a lap at Silverstone? Alternatively, admitting you're a cyclist and being hated by everyone?

And I think that largely is the problem... it's probably the "safest" hobby to admit to having, as just about every other hobby will get you type-casted in some way (e.g. he's a jock, a nerd etc.). On the other hand, for the first time now men are starting to feel the pressure to look good all the time (something that women have always had since forever)… and as Rr600 so eloquently pointed out, many train purely for the aesthetic gains, more than any other reason... so maybe we're trying to show solidarity with women on the looks thingy 😉

I only speak for myself here, but personally, what my body can do has always been more important than what it looks like. I get a kick/ buzz from knowing that 90-95% of guys can't do the physical things I can, and that many of them may never be able to achieve my level (regardless of how hard they try or determined they are; I'm sorry if that sounds somewhat big-headed, but it's blatantly true). The way my physique looks and any attention I get because of it has always been more of a bonus.

I think some of the issues may be (from what I see) the different mentalities between men and women who go to the gym. I find that the gym is one of the few places where men are sociable and actually talk to each other. Whether it's getting someone to spot you / watch your form, or chatting about some random topic in the sauna / steam room afterwards, there can be a lot of male bonding that goes on at the gym. Maybe it's a dopamine thing, but guys can talk to almost any other guy there. Women, on the other hand, I find tend to stay in their own "zone" and don't really talk to others, unless it's someone she's come to the gym with (the exception is in classes). You can also learn a lot of stuff and pick up tips from talking.

Still, for the record, my other hobbies include:- cycling; DJiing (including remixing and producing tracks); I like exploring new places; Going for a summer drive; I used to study Martial Arts (kyokushinkai karate and Wing Tsun kung fu); Dancing (mainly hip- hop including break-dancing)… Oh, and trying to help solve peoples problems when they post on boards like this :😝
