2nd year social work degree, got to redo one assignment

My daughter is currently at university and recently got her assignment results. One was really good results, the other wasn’t. So they have said they will assess portfolios by 8th July. She is assuming she will need to resubmit the assignment again, but they have said results won’t be available until the end of September. Problem is her accommodation want the rent paid by 5th September for the first term which usually she would use her student finance. Will she still get her finance, she has already applied and waiting for a response on the award. We are all stressing that she will have to resubmit the assignment and she will have nowhere to stay?

Hi there,

Do you mean that she may need to retake the year or she cannot continue on the course until she gets her results back at the end of September?

Thanks, Drew

Basically the way it stands is that she has her marks from the final two assessments. The portfolios will be assessed and results will be given to her on July 8th. Resubmission dates will be given then and they will goto the board at the end of September. I don’t know much about uni scoring or anything but I understand it to be that if she has not already gained 120 credits then they will want her to resubmit, but she thinks that basically you have to pass all assignments with a high score? Anyway if she has to resubmit the assignment then they will goto the September board but she cannot enrol until then meaning she cannot get her student finance? Obviously her accommodation need their rent on the 5th September and if she has to resubmit then she wouldn’t be able to pay the £3000 for rent?

Hi there,

She can still apply for Student Finance for her next year. If she has to retake her current year that can be updated later on. Our application timescale just now is 6-8 weeks. The first Maintenance Loan payment would be paid on/as close to the first day of the first term which will most likely be after the 5th of September.

Thanks,
Ross

Ok thankyou so much for the information. She had been told by the university that because she cannot enrol if she has to resubmit then she will not receive her finance which obviously would leave her with no accommodation. I will pass the information onto her, she has autism and worries a lot about things beyond her control so this will hopefully ease some of her worries. She has sent her application in for student finance but was concerned with no enrolment would mean no finance to help her either redo that year or move onto her final year.

You're welcome. If you do have any further questions then do let us know. Thanks, Jason
