Why is it good to go to University outside of your hometown?

Hi everyone, we have had quite a few questions about whether going to university outside your home town is a good idea.

In my opinion, I think that it is a great idea to go to university outside your home town, this is because it allows you to explore and develop within a new area of the country.

As well as this it allows you to meet new people from different backgrounds with which you can form friends for life.

I also think that it is a good idea as it can teach you important life skills for example - independence, organisational skills as well as improved communication skills

It also allows you to develop good financial management skills as you will be living by yourself.

What are your thoughts on this ... drop any further ideas below.

Hope this helps,

Hi there!

I think this is such a great question! Since I have now completed my Primary Education course at York St John, I have been reflecting on how great it has been living away from home. I have found friends for life in a beautiful area of England and a confident sense of independence through living away which has prepared me well for adult life.

I think that there are obviously positives about both options and factors which might seem unappealing about both depending on the person, because some might rather their family and close friends to remain around them whilst attending university, and some might like the freedom of going somewhere new and making a new life for themselves.

For me, I was so glad that I moved away because it was such a great opportunity to live in a part of the country that I would have otherwise not experienced if it was not for being at university and it now feels like a second home at which I can always revisit and feel comfort in. It's also a great opportunity to meet new people who you would not have otherwise met.

It also meant that I could have sleepovers with my friends whenever I wanted 🙂 The independence is exciting but also an important life skill to learn so what better opportunity than through university!

Looking forward to other perspectives!
